Travelling halfway across the world at just 16 was something I was both nervous and excited about. But as soon as I stepped off the plane, I felt at ease. Once you arrive there is a member of the Projects Abroad team ready to greet, and welcome you to this new place. They explain all the customs and take you directly to your destination so you don't have to worry about getting lost!

It was incredible to stay with my host family, and really get a feel as to what life is like in The Philippines. I was able to taste different foods, learn part of a new language and partake in cultural traditions. It was much more fun to stay with them as opposed to a hostel, as it made my whole experience more authentic.

Initially I was concerned about not being able to keep up with the other volunteers, and that I wouldn't physically be able to cope with the manual labour. However the staff are really welcoming, and have a keen eye for spotting what a person is comfortable with. No-one will push you into doing something: you set the pace and you can always ask for help from them. And I didn't have to be embarrassed in front of the other volunteers, as they told me 'we were all new once!'.

When my departure date came around, I found I didn't want to leave! I had such a fun time, and knowing that I had provided shelter, and housing for people in need made me feel really proud of myself.
