Firstly, the pre-departure support guide was amazing. It really gave me all the info I needed without spoiling any surprises in store! I would recommend having a good read, then read it again - on the plane like I did!
The in-country support from the team was excellent, the team are so friendly and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble! You may be thousands of miles from everything you've ever known but their certainly make you feel at home and give you a great welcome.

The accommodation in PMGY was amazing, when you tell people you're going to Africa they imagine mud-huts. The volunteer house is quite the opposite, it's actually nicer than my house in England! You feel comfortable and safe whilst being right in the middle of a Tanzanian village. The house 'mama' is always on hand cooking up delicious meals too!

I worked at a local village school called Tenguru Village School which catered for children from the ages of 3 - 6. I had a class of about 30 children, all were 5/6 year olds and were amazing!
The teachers were so welcoming, helpful and friendly! They are just so grateful for your help and thankful for your knowledge. A general day involved teaching my class English, Phonics, Maths and very basic science (think 'Heads Shoulders Knees & Toes!) Play time is a lot of fun, you can play football with them and any other games you fancy. Be warned, they do climb all over you! It's lots of fun. I would also serve lunch to the children every day and then get the honour of doing 100 dishes afterwards! All in a days work.

My advice for potential volunteers would be to have some lesson plans prepared, nothing too serious as it will probably go out of the window! But think about games and fun things they can do… They LOVE it when you let them write on the black board. I took sweets and stickers, be careful with them as they go nuts for them and you can start arguments. Sit them all down and hand them out one by one, sometimes they will pretend they didn't get one.

Genuinely the best few weeks of my life and would highly recommend to anyone!
