“Trip of a life-time!”

I spent a long time researching into the different companies offering volunteering experiences in Sri Lanka. I am so glad I chose PLAN MY GAP YEAR! The website looked professional and had all the itinerary explained. It seemed like the right trip for me and above all it was a lot cheaper than some other companies.

The volunteer handbook was extremely helpful and had so many handy tips. The replies to my emails prior to the trip were always speedy responses and as helpful as possible. We were told we were going to be picked up at the airport so I had no worries before we left.

Accommodation was basic but absolutely fine. We were very hot in our room (not used to the humidity!) but the family we stayed with offered us as many fans as possible to keep us comfortable. The family we stayed with were amazing throughout, it really felt as if I was staying with relatives. They bent over backwards to meet our needs. Great food provided along with great company.

The two project coordinators were fantastic. Not only were they organised and knowledgeable about Sri Lanka, but they were great fun to be around and we always had a laugh. The trip would not have been the same without them.

I worked at the private girls orphanage. I was apprehensive at first (I had never worked with children before) but warmed to the project pretty much as soon as I arrived there! The girls were just absolutely lovely and so keen to learn. My advice would be to bring pictures or photos of England or wherever you are from because they asked us everyday to see some! The only difficult part was saying goodbye.

I had such an amazing experience in Sri Lanka with PMGY. Such a beautiful country to visit with the friendliest people you will ever meet. The only regret I have is not staying longer. I opted to stay for 1 month and although I taught for 4 weeks at the orphanage I was not ready to leave. When booking with PMGY, go for at least 2 months!!
