“India Slum School - Summer 2012”

Over the summer I spent 4 weeks living with a host family and working in a slum school in Faridabad, India. From the outset the programme co-ordinators allowed me to feel relaxed and excited about the daunting experience for a solo traveler. I am very thankful to Gad and Phillip who supported me throughout the application process and build up to the trip, giving me advice where needed as quickly as possible, and for putting up with my worried Mum! Even after I arrived in India they continued to ensure I felt secure and happy in my environment. As expected the Indian culture was a huge shock, particularly when working in the slum school, and at times you feel a very long way from home but when staying with Kranti and her family I was made to feel at home 24/7. I cannot begin to thank Kranti, Dr Bandhu and their family enough for the continued support throughout my stay, they are always happy to help, even with regards to travel after you have left their home, and continually fill you with delicious home made food. I felt extremely welcomed into their family and will miss them very much. The opportunities that Plan My Gap Year has given me has been exceptional, working in the school has not only broadened my insight to other cultures, but also given me eye opening experiences and inspired me to work with children in need more in the future. Plan My Gap Year has many qualities - it is a friendly, affordable company, however my favourite attribute is the flexibility they offer you - I was lucky enough to work in the orphanage and Women's Empowerment Project alongside my own project, making my experience all the more enjoyable. I will never forget the people I have met and the amazing opportunities I have had this summer - Thank you PGMY!
