I worked for GVI for 2 years, and learned in that time that the organization goes to great lengths to 1--make a profit, 2--quiet any negative comments about them and 3--rip off everyone who signs on for their programs. I was horrified at their lack of ethics, and how they tried to gloss over all their terrible behavior by saying "we're saving the world, so suck it up and keep silent." It's all a scam. Having said that, it's very possible, depending on the program, to go and have a great experience. But it's a crrap shoot. Just know, you can't depend on staff, or the company as an entity, to have your best interest or the best interest of the country where you're volunteering in mind. They are scum. Their programs can be awesome, but not by fault of the company. It's just a happy accident if things turn out well.
