“Highland Farm Gibbon Sanctuary - The Time of My Life”

In the summer of 2011, I spent my time volunteering at Highland Farm Gibbon Sanctuary in Thailand. Being the first time I had travelled outside Europe, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect - but I wasn't disappointed!

During my time in Thailand, I got to work in close proximity with over 50 gibbons and a very friendly staff and group of volunteers. As long as you feel comfortable, you are able to try and hand feed some of the gibbons at lunchtime - though some will react more kindly than others! Though if you're feeling extremely comfortable, you can go into the nursery with the younger gibbons and play with them, swinging them about the enclosure while they climb all over you and play with your hair.

As well as the interaction with these fantastic animals, we explored the local area, including the town of Mae Sot and various waterfalls near the sanctuary. There were regular outings for dinner or lunch at nearby restaurants, though when we stayed on the farm there was home-cooked Thai food - absolutely divine, it has become my favourite dish!

If you're looking for a project that will have you involved with the animals and experiencing the world and a different culture like never before, take into consideration the Highland Farm Gibbon Sanctuary, I certainly didn't regret it.
