“Phenomenal Experience in Kenya”

I spent 4 weeks in Kenya after booking the package just 10 days before going out there. Everything was organised and went without a single hitch.

I volunteered for the orphanage but given that the kids go to school each day I ended up teaching at the school within the orphanage which was fine by me.

The staff in the volunteer house were fantastic and I really couldn't think of a single item that they could improve on, the food was great, staff were always available on the phone and you meet so many people from around the world and everyone gets on. You can relax on the roof, watch DVD's or play card games AND monopoly with the other volunteers. The question of security has arisen on an earlier review but I couldn't see anything wrong, they have external doors which are locked and only opened by security with only known volunteers and people living within the compound allowed in and a strict curfew for the volunteers to ensure they are safe. The house itself is quadruple locked at night, so no chance anyone is getting in that shouldn't be. The neighbourhood is perfectly fine during the day with young children running up for hugs or to hold your hand constantly and encouraging you to play with them, either skip rope or racing tyres are the two main ones.

The placement was fantastic, you are taken there the first day by one of the staff by either Matatu (public transport... kind of) or by walking and then expected to make your own way there thereafter, understandable when there is over 15 volunteers in the house! The teachers there were great as was the head and all kids are amazing. If you want some amazing pictures just give them your camera for the day.

I did most placements, Safari, Kibera, Hell's Gate, Mount Longonot and Masaai Tribe.

Safari is amazing and exactly what you expect lots of animals in their natural environment.

Kibera is a real eye opener for anyone who wants to see real poverty but with people still living a smile on their face. You hear from a couple of families and then purchase some food for each family from the amount you paid for the trip.

Hell's Gate is probably one of the best excursions you can do, a bike ride, hiking, climbing, relaxing in sulphur springs, boat road and seeing lots of animals. Definitely a must.

Mount Longonot is quite simply a hard hike up a mountain but the views are stunning.

Masaai Tribe is not for the faint hearted and you need to have an open mind. You pick up bottled water on the way but that's it, don't expect showers, toilets, a cooking hob etc. this is living the Masaai way with a fantastic hike (around 7 hours), children that are infatuated with you, going out hunting, milking a cow etc. It's definitely worth doing if you can live without modern comforts for a few days!
