Bought this a couple of years ago, hardly used....maybe 30/40 times, turned it on the other day and got the 3 rings.

Although out of warranty the lack of use and fact that it is a known issue should mean a replacement or at least a free repair.

Sorry Mr Gates, no more money from me!
