We've just returned from a 6th Gear experience at a wet Elvington airfield. It was primarily booked as a birthday present for my fairly tall 9 year old son (4 ft 10 in minimum height) but I had to have a go myself!
The 6th Gear set up was impressive with a vast array of super cars, helicopter and truck rides and reasonably priced catering truck. The staff were all very welcoming and looked after us well.
My son drove a Ferrari 360 with a friendly instructor and got out with a huge grin after his 15 mins or so of driving. Soon after it was my turn in a Lamborghini Gallardo and I was in for a pleasant surprise; I expected this to be pretty tame and a poor relation to a true track experience but I was encouraged to really push the limits of both the car and my abilities. The instructor really seemed keen to help me explore the cars capabilities and gave great coaching. Next up was an R8 (I'd much rather have driven an Atom or Ferrari but they were booked up for the times I wanted) and I had fun in this although this instructor was not quite as fearless as the first, I was instructed to brake earlier than in the Lamborghini and not encouraged to stay on the power for quite as long. The R8 was a very accessible car to drive and I did enjoy the ride with the speeds I was allowed to drive being very fair for such an experience day, it just didn't get the pulse racing quite as much as driving the Lamborghini. We rounded off the day by giving my son a hot lap in a Gallardo just so he could experience what the cars can actually do.
All in all we've come away very pleased with 6th Gears' experience and I've just had to measure my son to see how far off he is from the 5ft minimum height for the Gallardo!
