“THE WORST - UNRELIABLE - FREQUENT OUTAGES - LOST EMAILS”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/06/2016

06-16-2016, lycos EMAIL (not 'mail') has been down for over 24 hrs again, and last week ALL EMAILS FOR ALL LYCOS END USERS WERE DELETED. Gone were all folders, all emails, all filter rules. It was only restored after 6 long days. SIX DAYS WITH EMAIL BEING DOWN IN 2016. I mean it's 2016 not 1995 but they run it like it's 1985. LYCOS IS AN AMATEUR OUTFIT THAT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT RELIABILITY. Just look at the overall result of all the independent and unbiased reviews of lycos on this website (over 150 reviews). Lycos has a rating of 1 out of 5 based on over 150 unbiased reviews. They have a BBB rating of "F". LYCOS OWNERS AND MANAGERS DO NOT LISTEN. Even if they somehow get it working again, next the "user interface" is going to be completely "changed" all around again, for the 5th time, for no reason. It's an epidemic, software companies changing things for no reason, and placing reliability at #10 instead of #1.

“Constant issues”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/09/2015

I've used it for more than 12 years. There has always been some issues with logging in, slowliness, text display, slow spam filtering. Now, I have not been able to log in for 2 days. I am done. I just hope it comes back for long enough to retrieve some information and register everything to a different email/provider. They don't even bother to acknowledge the issue and post updates on the main customer support page.

“Lycos mail down again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 130Campbell on 11/09/2015

What's wrong with the people at Lycos. Why do they not keep the mail site reliable. It's been 8 days and no mail. This is so frequent. I made the mistake and relied on it for business.

“It was good, then it was manageable, now it is...”

written by on 30/07/2015

I guess lycos just couldn't catch up with Google mail or Hotmail. While the new lycos interface is okay with the latest change, they obviously did not pump in much money for the mail system. Which I usually receive mail in minutes, now the mail do not reach me until hours later. I need an mobile app, too. Who would use a computer to access their emails these days?

“LYCOS MAIL is rubbish”

★☆☆☆☆

written by StephenReview on 29/10/2014

Lycos mail is down yet again. i am receiving mail , however i cant send e-mail yet again. This is over a week now. When it was MAILCITY years ago in the 11990's it always worked. This is possibly worst e-mail available. Do not recommend for anybody. LYCOS 0 out of 0 for service.

“horrible”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ImaniHensley on 04/10/2014

Horrible. Many functions did not work, including spam blocking and just so many ordinary functions half working or not working. I struggled with utterly outrageous support responses for like a year. Finally they simply closed the account without warning saying it wasn't used, which was incorrect, while not fixing any of the things I struggled with them about. They even said they could not fix them because some other company makes their stuff, and contacting them was useless also. Lycos is horrible. I see reason why anyone should use it now. No wonder it gets a 1 star here from others!

“Very poor”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DerickGrady on 08/08/2014

I have always had issues with LYCOS I use it for any on line inquiries and use Gmail for regular email. Got fed up wit the regular 'we're having a temporary issue with Login' or not recognising my password or putting me through to a form page to fill in so that I can be charged for teis substandard service. Poor, but at least they are consistent

“Text wrapping”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McDonald184 on 09/07/2014

With Lycos recently changing its webmail setup, text wrapping has disappeared, each line needs to be terminated by using the return key other wise the lines overwrite each other. When sending the mail that appears as correctly formatted in the compose email display, the display for the recipient will be,however, all over the place. I have wasted hours to fix this problem to no avail. Pretty disappointing

“Best to avoid!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Warren425 on 29/06/2014

Started with Freeserve fifteen years ago and it was tolerable then, but things have got steadily worse. I use it, as others do, mostly when making on-line purchases - it gets all the spam - and delete in blocks every now and again. When I log on it says "password incorrect" - but still logs me in anyway. So much for security! It is utterly useless at filtering spam, no matter how many times you flag files up, so you have to keep on deleting the same messages over and over again. Yesterday the login page had changed and this time really wouldn't accept my password. I changed the password 'successfully' (at least it recognised me as a member) and tried again. Success! I got in, only to find all mail contacts had disappeared, along with all the mail, albeit spam! I am not even going to bother to try to contact Lycos - they were useless at support in the past - and for me this is the final straw. This is one free email service best to avoid!

“What an utterly piece of BEEP!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/01/2014

Always down when you need it the most. Even if you use the proper password (I had it double checked and I have witnesses who saw I used the proper one) it tells you sometimes your user name and password don't match. Ridiculous!

“Ad City”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Alrikor on 26/11/2013

I use an ad-blocker at home and it's not really an issue, but at work when I want to check e-mail this is not an option. When you try to sign in the following happens: 1) An animated ad pops up. 2) A normal ad pops up in the background. 3) A second normal ad pops up in the middle of your screen. When you close it and then go to click on the user name entry box again, the ad pops back up again. You need to basically leave the ad up and move it to the side because every single time you click the user name or password box, it triggers another ad to pop up. Again, these aren't issues when you have a pop-up blocker, but it's... kind of insulting, really. You can tell they are intentionally trying to be as annoying as possible with the ads. I mean, whose bright idea was it to pop an ad in the middle of the screen every single time you try to enter your user name? Beyond that it's "decent". You can't tie it to a phone alert system unless you pay (something Gmail does for free). You can check it like normal on a smart phone, of course, but forget trying to send out a message - the default text that comes up with "Enter e-mail here" or whatever cannot be deleted on phone browsers, meaning you can't actually put in any e-mail addresses to send out. Also, the "remember my credentials" option is a joke and doesn't work at all. And why would they want it to when you clicking on the login/password box brings up more ads? This is now the e-mail service that I use for all of the websites where I am relatively sure I'll get spammed. It has no value because I seldom feel like checking it. So, yeah, if you use ad-blocker and need a spam bucket e-mail, this isn't bad, but there are better options (like Gmail) for a serious e-mail account. That said, for being my spam account it does do a decent job of weeding out the spam e-mails and putting them into the spam folder for me.

“ADS EVERYWHERE”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/04/2013

Been with free Lycos Web mail for more than 5 years through thick and thin, through Zimbra, bad service, being sold a couple of times and various other unimaginable things. Lately the basic service is more stable than previous years, for the most part. In last year I had only a few outages and they were responsive to my problem tickets. OK for a secondary mail service if you need one. HOWEVER....the ADS on the home and opening pages are ATROCIOUS. Pop up ads, streaming ads, banner ads...any type you can think of shown all at once. I know this service is free but this is over the top, almost an assault. If you sign up, be sure and get yourself a good ad blocker app. (I use the Simple Ad Block add-on in Firefox and it does the trick and is easy to turn off and on if it messes with any other sites.) If they would just tone down the ads a bit it's an OK Web mail service, at least for right now.

“A poor email service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/03/2013

I have been with Lycos for many years as a free account user. It was never one of the better email services, but in its Angelfire form, it was one of the earlier ones available and "good enough" at the time. Since then, the service has deteriorated consistently to the point where I would not recommend this provider to anybody. Notwithstanding the excessive amount of advertising (which I block, so its not a problem), the usability of the basic service leaves a lot to be desired. There is no POP access on the free account (everyone else provides POP for free), the search algorithms only work on some mail folders and not all of them (why on earth that should be so is any ones' guess). The predictive text for selecting recipients sometimes fails to predict (how can a line of code only work some of the time?). The server is often slow to respond to login and is also often down; more so than any other email provider that I know of. There is no obvious way to recover your email from the Lycos servers for safe archival storage on one's own PC (No POP for free accounts!) I have an alternative free account with Yahoo, which has none of the above problems, and am seriously thinking of ditching Lycos completely. I am writing this while I wait for Lycos to come on line again as its down now!

“Use to recieve spam and ads”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/02/2013

Started back with mailcity, I keep the account for registration at sites where I really don't care to hear from the site again, don't expect the site to respect privacy, etc. So, needless to say, it quickly fills with ads and spam. I delete unread messages in bulk, occasionally, opening one or two to read -or unsubscribe. Works pretty well for this purpose - I gave up trying to use it as a real email account years ago - unreliable service, poor interface, no POP, etc.

“Junk”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/11/2012

MANNNY years ago I used Angelfire mail. Which was fine. About 10 years ago it was closed down and merged with Lycos. Since then it has been in progressive decline. There was the Zimbra debacle, a 2 month outage, lost mail, NOW it just COVERED in adds. Log in screed, a banner add, a side bar add, and a video. Click log in and a pop up pops up right over the log in plane. While attempting to log in a new video starts playing and interupts your cursor so your log in fails. SO you are taken to the failed log in retry page, with three more adds. Then you can finally log in. Before your mail page opens, another video starts playing. Once you finally get to your male page, you have a blinking banner add, a side bar add, and a small video (with sound) that is about 5 seconds long and plays on a continuous loop while you do your thing with the mail. So the whole time you are in your mail, you have this annoying 5 second commercial looping over and over. All this and the UI is still clumsy, it took me about 5 minutes to find out how to compose a new message to someone without having a message to respond to... I understand the need of adds on a free mail service, but not to the point where it interferes with usability. There are so many other free services out there that have way less adds and are so much easier to use, like Gmail, Yahoo, etc. For the last 7 years I have only used lycos for my junk mail, like ebay, craigs list, etc. I cant stand using it for that anymore and just opened another Gmail account for junk mail. Screw Lycos!

Wabster's Comment

I have been with Lycos for a long time and I have paid account, about $20 a year, and I still get all this advertising popups and videos when trying to log in.

While I've been reasonably happy with their system since they lost everything I had stored some years ago, these intrusions are deal breaker and I'm migrating a lot of subscriptions and general email away from them with a view to reverting to their free account and ceasing to use it. As far as I know it is not possible to actually delete your account, which is poor service too.

“Ten years plus and still happy”

★★★★☆

written by Lycos_User on 16/11/2012

I'm not a particularly heavy user, 3-4 times a week but apart from the upgrade period a few years ago during which I lost a few older emails in the transfer and access was a little temperamental I experience good service. I pay nothing and still get 3gig, more than enough for my needs. POP3 access would be great but I don't have any issues a little patience can't resolve.

“Lycos email has always sucked in my opinion...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by former_Lycos_user on 13/08/2012

I have had Lycos email for MANY years. I have had trouble with it all along and now I can't even login to my account. I have used Yahoo email for a while and it has been pretty good. Gmail also works pretty well other than them spying on folks and now google wants to get your cell number in case you forget your login info, WTF???. Yes, Lycos has always been a piece of junk, in my opinion, and I would rate it at zero stars if possible. There are other free email accounts out there that are pretty dependable, so why settle for garbage?

“Incompetent, terrible support”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/05/2012

I too used lycos for more than 6 years. I noticed sometimes I couldn't log in, but allowed for some down time. I couldn't create folders but thought I was doing something wrong. Now I worked for Verizon and I am an email expert. I finally submitted a ticket after going through the directions carefully. I gave them time to correct the problem on their own. Wrong move! They sent my ticket back twice! The first time they "restored my folders and emails" meaning the emails I had deleted, they restored! And I deleted old folders that I wasn't using any more! I rejected the ticket, and told them that I needed to have the ability to create new folders and have them show up on my dashboard. Then I got a response that they logged into my account and found nothing wrong. Please try to create more new folders. Of course I tried, and still not working. I replied, If everything is working why can't I see the folders I created? Please escalate to a supervisor. You didn't read the ticket, and you didn't test the resolution at all. They didn't even try to create a folder. I told them to log into my account and create several new folders and see if they show up. They didn't even test anything! Incompetent, stupid people! I forwarded all of my emails to g-mail, entered my contacts into g-mail and deleted all of my lycos contacts, deleted all of my lycos folders(old ones), and any mail that came from lycos I either unsubscribed or changed my email address. I changed my facebook and bank email, and any other accounts. It only took 2 days to have g-mail on everything. Don't ever use Lycos. Their service never worked, I just put up with it for several years before I decided to do something about it. Another complaint about Lycos, they allow so much spam to come through it is ridiculous! I've never seen so much spam, and my filters were set as high as they could go. Lycos spam is even worse than AOL. And haven't used AOL in 8 years! Stay away from Lycos. Use your ISP's email or g-mail.
