“Industrial Scripts Script Reading Course Review”

Written on: 11/04/2012

The focus of the day was on reading and writing script reports for the film industry as well as how to secure work as a reader. The course definitely delivered in terms of how to work in the industry and how the industry works. There is no question that the tutors know their material well. Industrial Scripts are also very generous in the information they provide to attendees, which is thorough and up to date. Unfortunately unless you had a laptop it was not accessible, despite being told that iPads would be compatible. This is only possible after lengthy downloading and unzipping of files, which is not a function everyone needs and therefore has ready to hand on their iPads.
Overall, there was too much information to cover in just one day, despite the best efforts of tutor, Jon Gilbert, who clearly knew his subject and proved to be a good teacher. For the totally uninitiated, the content provided on what to look for in script and how to critically examine this, while also learning how to write a concise, well constructed report was too swiftly dealt with.
The offer of writing a report and receiving feedback is very appealing, however, the impact of this has been reduced by today's email reminding us to complete this online feedback form as a pre-requisite for receiving this feedback! This wasn't explained in the day's session and there is no reason why it should not be declared upfront. It is hidden away under a caveat that says, ***IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not adhere to the Checklist below your report will not be marked.*** and submitting feedback is item 7. Cute but not clever, nor designed to build on great post-purchase feelings about the course.
Otherwise these comments would have been four star.
