When you sign up there is only one subscription option, which is automatic renewal. I have used subscription based internet services before and babel was the only one that offered no alternatives. Furthermore, they don't send you any kind of reminder before they charge you so if you forget to cancel your subscription they charge you and then of course refuse to refund, even if you request it immediately because you're only entitled to a refund withing 20 days of your first payment (which in... There was no email or any notice reminding customers that the account is about to be auto renewed. Babbel expects its customers to remember to cancel the account six months after they first paid. There is no option to not auto renew. So six months later, I am no longer using Babbel but found a surprised charge on my credit card. Immediately I contacted Babbel to cancel my membership and to request a partial refund. I am reasonable. I didn't remember, six months later, that my Babbel account... (read more)

This company knows that they are cheating people. More importantly, if you care about your language skills, dont ruin them here at babbel, because you will have a very difficult time unlearning the mistakes they teach here at babbel. 99% of Swedish words are in error. "I wonder how happy babbel users would be when they realize that they have taught them incorrectly. I wonder what they will think when they realize that it isn't Swedish, because not a single Swedish speaker on the planet... (read more)

I have been using this service for nearly a year, It is a great study aid, and to a degree a self teaching aid. I teminated my account at the end of school, I had no trouble doing so, all I had to do is send an email to the account they provided telling them I wished to end my account. They saved my account and I couold still review some of my lessons (which was a suprise to me). At the start of the next year I activated my account again. (they held my place in the lessons). Their refunds... (read more)

Appalling customer service and illegal billing practices. I have had unauthorised charges taken from my account and their customer service team is nothing but insulting. Have had to open a dispute with my bank to rectify the issue. (read more)

Babbel has very unclear and deceptive billing practices. The website indicates a 20 day period for refunds. I cancelled the day I was billed and they refused my refund. I HAVE 6 MONTHS OF A WORTHLESS APP I DON'T WANT and a US$44.70 CHARGE ON MY CREDIT CARD. Check out other review sites. I am not the only one with this problem. (read more)

Hi gardennss,
Thank you very much for your feedback! We appreciate your opinion on learning a language without a guiding teacher but I'd like to point out that at Babbel we don't want to replace teachers in any way. Babbel is mostly an application for beginners and intermediate learners. It can be a very good start and works fine in combination with courses by personal teachers.
We try to give our users the possibility to start off with a language at their own pace and most of all to keep up learning without the preassure of a usual language class.
On the other hand I am very keen to read your thought on our prices. As far as we can see Babbel offers language courses at a very competitive price.
Greetings,
Marvin from the Babbel Team

I have used books, cd and evening courses but Babbel has developed me much further! I can learn in my own time with a stuctured course and practise with friends. The interation really helps to make the new language part of your language. (read more)

Since I found Babbel.com on the Internet, I've gotten a lot of insight on the French laguage. The key elements of French are: I like the way I can repeat after the native speaker. Also, I can go at my own pace, and I can study at my own pace. Sometimes, the speaker goes too fast, but I can go back and repeat the lesson, whenever I want. I really like Babbel.com. It helps me where other sites don't. I also like the way I can type the translation from French to English, and visa versa. My... (read more)

i find babbel most useful as it certainly enables words and vocabulary to become embedded in the memory bank. you are able to access it as often and as frequently as you like or time allows. babbel is certainly on e of the more useful language tools avaibable online, many of the others are more expensive, less useful and in my opinon they are over hyped. not the case with babbel (read more)

items are relavant to the level of learning required. The use of pictures, dialogue, voice over and exercises utilise the main senses for learning. Im enjoying the course and it encourages meet to keep on learning. The practice and review elements are very helpful and sometimes you feel a bit of a prat when you keep making the same mistakes. Often its because of typographical errors but anyway in the end you get it rigth (read more)

After struggling with technological gliches, after I paid for a year subscription, the site settled down and I now use it with confidence. Brilliant for building up vocabulary but I was very frustrated putting my own words together until the new intermediate grammar came out. That has been very good but I now want more and will it come before my subscription ends? And will it be enough to keep me engaged in the future? I do like the way the personal vocabulary bank builds up and the ease... (read more)

I had visited free language learning websites in the past. But wanted to try a new approach. There are things I really like about the course. I like the use of dialogue. I wish it used that a little more. The review manager is helpful to keep you refreshed on the things you already learned. I am a total penny pincher so I would like to see the price go down a little. But considering you could pay hundreds for soft ware and DVDs it's not exceptionally expensive. Over all I would say I know... (read more)

This is a really fun way to learn a new language. Being able to speak the language into the microphone to ensure that I'm pronouncing words correctly is great. My husband confirms that my pronunciation has improved and since I'm saying words in another language out loud on a regular basis, I'm more confident in saying them to my Swedish speaking family. I only wish I had more time to practice... this is a great program and I'm having a great time. (read more)

I've been through a few language learning courses online and on PC but don't think any of them taught me as much in as little time as babbel.com. Their pronunciation analyser isn't quite right yet, and it doesn't have quite the amount of advanced courses as it could but the price for the whole package is €10 per month or less which is fair, and it comes with a simplified iPhone version too which is somewhat useful for recaps. Photographs are nice and most part of the time relevant. Topics are various and connected with modern lifestyle. What makes it very pleasant is the possibility to choose the topics you like among a wide panel. It 's great to learn at the same time how to pronounce, to write and the meaning of a language ! Nevertheless, it is difficult to assess the progress i am supposed to do. But the overall experience is good : perhaps would it be a good idea to practice "in live" sometimes. (read more)

I have found that babbel takes the novice learner in easy memorable steps from not knowing any of the new language to being able to use a lot of words in practical situations in a fairly shorty space of time. The key strength of the system is that it keeps you motivated by stepping up in difficulty gradually so you don't feel overwhelmed. I have used a lot of German learned on babbel in Germany and managed to book a table in a restaurant, ask for the bill, find out why a train was delayed... (read more)

After trying many diffent programs to learn Spanish on my iPad, i downloaded and used the Babbel iPhone app .... and it was the first program that I really liked. After that I subscribed to the online courses on the website. And so far I'm impressed again. Simple, and direct to the point, fun and easy. Without useless functions, without holes between the lessons, whole and solid, making the person confident about his learning progress. And it makes me speak out loud because of the speech... I tried with many different approaches, but i could never get myself to really learn a foreign language. Then one day i stumbled on Babbel and gave it a try - and was sold from the first moment on. The Videogame-like Interface motivated me and turned learning into a great game, i mean, my wife even had to stop me from learning with Babbel.com nonstop, otherwise i wouldn't have slept anymore. Finally a positive addiction: learning languages. I started with French and went on - i even... (read more)

Their refunds are not "a bit difficult to understand", they are non-existent. They will only refund you within 20 days of the initial subscription, which is a "teaser" 1 dollar. The first actual payment is made 30 days after the initial subscription, which means it's after the refund period has ended so in practice you can never get a refund.
