ARTIST: TIMOTHY WENZEL CD: A COALESCENCE OF DREAMS If you take a listen to the great instrumental music on the new album by Timothy Wenzel called A COALESCENCE OF DREAMS, you may wonder where he gets his inspiration. Sometimes his music is inspired by places -- a scenic drive in Hawaii “Road to Hana”, a Michigan forest “A Walk in the Summer Woods”, or hiking in the wilds of Germany “Mountain Rain”. Other times it is the history of a place that causes Wenzel to create music. One composition “Ice Wind” is about a Swedish island where a major city existed in ancient times but disappeared in the 8th Century. Another piece “Desert Sky” is what Wenzel calls an alternative soundtrack to the film “The Sheltering Sky” directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and an adaptation of the novel by Paul Bowles set in North Africa. Some of the music “Follow the River” captures the tale and trail of Mary Ingles who was kidnapped by Shawnee Indians in the Eastern United States in 1755 and transported a thousand miles, but escaped and made her way home with no supplies. Fascinating thoughts behind this deeply-intriguing music. The music is right-in-the-pocket new age music blending piano and synth in a traditional way including the sounds of instruments such as violin, flute, guitar and drums. This is an excellent coalescence of sounds. I let it serve as a backdrop to some daydreaming and it worked well. Find some excerpts online and take the music out for a test-drive. It is a fine trip.
