Natalie Portman is fantastic in this movie! She plays so natural that I couldn't take my eyes off. This is going to be my favorite film of 2011.

I loved this film, was completely on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Natalie's performance is amazing in this and she really did deserve that Oscar!I completly believed that she was a ballet dancer!

I really liked how dark the story was, unexpected!

I will be buying this when it comes out on DVD.

I have been a Nathalie Portman fan since "the professional" (an american remake of "Leon" the french film with jean reno, funny enough Jean Reno also started in the remake with Portman) she played a "lolita" inlove with an for pay killer (and in the end he loved her back regardless to the fact that her character "Mathilda" was less than 12 years old.... so eeew but on film, delifintely sentimental.

in black swan she shines, (despite Milla Kunis' best efforts... milla doesnt succeed) Nathalie is so compelling, so horrifying, so easy to watch, so "wow" that no one can take it from her and she proved it at the Oscars. the cherry on this "cake"of a movie is my "crush" on french actor Vincent Cassel who plays "thomas" in the movie. Vincent definitely made this movie the much more enjoyable!

Black Swan is a unusual film to have made it to the mainstream. This is due mainly to the casting of Natalie Portman. Darren Aronofsky is best known for his art house movie Requiem for a dream where he created a dreamlike world where you are not sure what is real and what is not.

In Black Swan he manipulates the audience with his use of music and choice of camera shots creating at times a disorientating feeling and general sense of unease leaving you feeling unsettled and never comfortable during the film. The story contains strong themes of control and of altered minds. Natalie Portman is excellent throughout and finally shows us her range as her character reacts to the increasing stress and pressure placed on her by both her mother and the ballet company.

I really enjoyed the film and although it might not be a Saturday night popcorn flick is the kind of film that you would watch again to see what you missed the first time round. Cleverly directed with a strong supporting cast including Winona Ryder, I'd recommend for a Sunday afternoon with friends so you can dissect it afterwards.

“One of those movies you really like or you really hate. ”

One of those movies you really like or you really hate.
While the movie is gripping and Natalie Portman is a perfect cast for the role, its also very disturbing and jarring for a nice movie night out.

I would recommend it to friends who are art movie lovers and not to those who're just going for a chilled movie night out.

People have asked me to describe what this film is - is it a horror, is it a thriller. I'd have to say I really couldn't tell you - it's extremely difficult to pigeon-hole. One thing I would say is this film is weird. It made me jump on quite a few occasions, and bits of it are pretty difficult to watch, although not as difficult as some of Darren Aronofsky's other outings (Requiem For A Dream, for example). The acting is superb, with a stellar performance by Natalie Portman, who has now got to be a front runner for Best Actress at the Oscars.

In a nutshell, the film is about the bitchiness and jealousy of ballerinas, and the mental unravelling of one of those ballerinas as she achieves her dream of getting the lead role in Swan Lake. Definitely go and see it while it's still in the cinema

“Disturbing images and disturbing, and disturbed,...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 04/02/2011

Disturbing images and disturbing, and disturbed, characters make this a movie that will only selectively appeal to viewers.
'Black Swan' has a fascinating theme and one well worth exploring, though I feel this movie has been done without the subtlety it deserves. The director opted at times for graphic imagery better suited to a horror film than to a movie which might masterfully have explored the complexities of the subject matter. Cheap cinematographic 'tricks' add shock appeal and grab the audiences' attention, but only serve to reduce this to the status of a B grade movie.
Natalie Portman is convincing as the ingenue gradually turning into the Black Swan, though neither her character, nor any other in the movie, is one which endears the audience to them.
Challenging cinema, though not necessarily for the right reasons.
