CobraWires's review of Everest Windows - www.everest.co.uk

“Dubious practice ?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CobraWires on 22/02/2017

On 8th December, 2016, my 90-year old father had a visit from an Everest "engineer" to diagnose a fault with his electric garage door operator. Without inspecting the operator at all, the Everest representative told my father that the motor needed replacing, saying "These don't often last more than five years". He then got my father to write him a cheque for £1,250 ! There was no written quotation or receipt.

On 28th December I inspected the operator, and found that the lightbulb had failed, causing the internal fuse to blow. I replaced these, and the operator is now functioning as expected. Cost to fix £3 !

My father 'phoned Everest five times, and was repeatedly offered a refund, but Everest did NOTHING. I took over the matter on behalf of my father (after he completed a Third Party Authorisation form, as demanded by Everest).

Since then Everest consistently "fobbed me off" with repeated promises of "escalated to senior management", etc., and offers of a refund.

Finally Everest did send a refund of £1,250 on 8th February. However the company refuses to explain :
1. How this was allowed to happen ?
2. What will be done about it ?
3. What steps will be taken to ensure that other customers are not treated in a similar fashion ?

I am quite appalled at this mode of operation and the way that a senior citizen has been treated. From reading reviews here, and elsewhere, this experience with Everest is far from a one-off.

I can only hope that Trading Standards and other authorities note the number and nature of complaints on these kind of sites and put pressure on Everest to start treating their customers with respect.
Only then might you start to get answers to your questions CobraWires.
In the meantime, you, me and many others have learned the hard way never to use this company again.

Thank you for your comment.

Sorry to hear that Everest also treated you (and many, many other people) so badly.

I am hoping that Watchdog may do a feature on this company.

Please bear in mind that "Everest Limited" is effectively a trading name of "Hillary Bidco Limited", which is wholly owned by "BECAP12 Fund LP", or Better Capital.

Better Capital is a "venture capital" company, based in Guernsey. They acquired Everest in 2012.

This is from the Better Capital website :

"The Better Capital Funds are seeking to invest in portfolios of businesses which have significant operating issues and may have associated financial distress, with a primary focus on businesses which have significant activities within the United Kingdom or Ireland."

He is a director of both Hillary Bidco Limited and Better Capital.

Have a look at the latest (2015) published company report of Hillary Bidco Limited and you will see why Everest seem to be struggling.

Equally unsurprising is that 90% of the reviews Everest choose to fool the punters with on their own website are 5 star and the rest are 4 star.
Not an unhappy customer in sight.
If only they were as good and honest as they would like you to believe.

Interesting that on The Review Centre 48.7% of Everest reviews score 1 star, whereas on the site that Everest link to "only" 13.1% of the reviews score 1 star.
