I had CR Smith sash windows and CR Smith doors fitted to my pre 1890's flat. My recommendation seems to have turned into an essay but it's worth the read if you're looking for a really good similar product and faultless service. I used a quote internet website and agreed to see 5 companies for quotes to replace 8 single paned sash windows and 2 doors in my pre 1890's flat - I had finally had enough of the cold wind blowing through the gaps. I told all of the companies that I wanted double glazed windows that would appear the same as my old windows and to the others in the row of flats if viewed from the road. The cheapest quote I had was around £5k (not sash) and the highest 2 quotes just shy of £11k, one of which insisted I had to take out a loan to get their discount. I did not want or need a loan as I already had the cash from re-mortgaging - a fact that I had emphasised at the very start of each meeting. That company were also planning to fit their non-sash windows into my old surrounds, at least 1 of which was beginning to rot. CR Smith was the supplier I chose and was the most expensive quote I received. After I had chosen CR Smith their salesman visited a further 2 times to ensure that my choice was what I actually wanted before I signed on the dotted line. One of CR Smith's office based staff then contacted me and became the overseer of the fitting, arranging dates, times etc. and became my point of contact for any questions I might have. The staff member who visited within the next few days to accurately measure the replacement sizes also double checked my order and corrected a mistake in the order. The manufacture and fitting of the units was arranged within a month and, as I had wanted, was possible before Christmas. The fitting took over 3 days and the two staff doing it were exceptional in the work they carried out - completely removing my old, pre-1890 windows and ensuring that the decorative wooden surrounds were precision cut to join my difficult existing Victorian panels. Apart from the inevitable dust that took a week to settle (they did put dust sheets down and cover my TV etc.) the fitters cleared the flat of any debris as they progressed. The level of work they carried out was certainly over and above what I had anticipated. They even fitted a cat flap that I had privately purchased into the back door. The decorator was arranged to stain and wax/varnish the wood surrounds on the 4th consecutive day of the fitting and advised me on which finish would be most appropriate for each room. The area manager visited 3 weeks later to inspect the level of workmanship and give me the opportunity to discus any problems I had found having 'lived' with CR Smith's windows, doors and level of work for a few weeks. I had absolutely no problems or regrets from choosing CR Smith. As I type this I'm sitting opposite windows that I have to see every minute I'm in my living room and they please me, immensely. Any defect or fault, however minor, would have constantly irritated me. Ultimately, are CR Smith the cheapest? Certainly not. Was it painless? CR Smith ensured that any inconvenience was limited. Are CR Smith the one I would chose since I intend to live with the windows and doors for the rest of my life? Yes.
