“such a shame ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DaneHarrison on 27/01/2017

I joined the site very near the beginning and it was wonderful. It was a true online community where you could 'meet and talk' with a feeling of safety.Meets were organised by the owners to enable members to meet each other in person and as a little thank you.Slowly it became a dating site also it was then it was sold. Since it has been sold as a member you never know what is going to happen one day its a free site the next payment is demanded to participate in the chat rooms or the forum. This has happened on more than one occasion. The last occasion was when I logged on on January 1st 2017 only to find i can no longer access the areas i had previously. There was no time to let any friends know a e mail address so you could keep in touch. Members have been banned from the site for doing so. Yes it was free (and still claims to be for certain activities) however to me it makes little business sense not to give people an option before making changing the membership terms even for the hosts i can only assume that it was so people could not give each other their details and communicate afterwards. It now advertises chat room which are empty and a forum which is not used and asks for a monthly fee to use them. I did a little research and it appears there are no directors and the company has been dissolved however, they are still charging people to join the site. BUYER BEWARE

“Not a shadow of its former self.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Spasimodo on 04/01/2017

Initially Makefriendsonline was a very successful, friendly and active friendship site run by people who had an interest in both the site and its members. It was sold to new owners who reneged on the conditions that were agreed for the sale by increasing membership fees and reducing facilities, resulting in members leaving in droves. The present owner seems intent on screwing members for what he can get, packing the site with bogus members, profiles. The parent company SkyStem Ltd was dissolved in August 2016, now shows no directors and has little by way of assets. A sister site Anotherfriend is based in Ireland and is run in a similar way. This site is a shadow of its former self and has survived due to the reputation it generated in its original format under its original owner I doubt if this site will survive until the end of 2017 and would advise against paying any fees - it's about to go down the tubes, in the name of greed !!.

“Employees of the site will pretend to be users....”

written by Kai1985 on 25/04/2016

Employees of the site will pretend to be users. Eventually after a few messages they will say they want to send you pics trying to get you to pay the monthly reoccurring charge. Just another trash site trying to trick you into a monthly bill that is very difficult to cancel.

“Not impressed.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TheReviewGuy96 on 21/12/2015

I joined this site last month in hopes of making new friends online, and with a website that directly tells you to make new friends online, I was optimistic; yet kept expectations low because of the unknown. This website first of all, is really difficult to navigate around. It's like trying to go through a maze. Secondly, you have to pay to get "special features". If I'm making a friend online, I shouldn't have to pay for anything, and nobody else should either. I feel it would be a waste of money. The quality of people there are below average. I feel the demographics for the majority are 40+, and people who are my age (I'm 19 so 18-25) are quite non-existent. The ones who are on that site, send you one message, then disappear off the face of the earth. When you do engage in a conversation with someone, you're only allowed to send 10 messages a day. Only 10. So, there's another downfall. Oh, and don't bother trying to talk to someone who's 40+ when you're my age, because they'll tell you to go "make friends who are your age". Like being friends with someone younger than you is not acceptable?? Not a welcoming bunch, that's for sure. Would NOT recommend this to anyone. If you want to make new friends, you're better off going to another site.

“This Site Is Awful!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by guest135792468 on 13/08/2014

I somehow became a subscribing member without ever signing up for it! I know for a fact because I use this site more for fun than anything serious and there is no way I would pay for it. I logged on one day and it said congratulations you are a gold member. I've been trying to get to the registration page but it has been loading for about 15 minutes, while the rest of the site loads perfectly fast. This site is complete bull and I would highly recommend you avoid this site at all costs!

“ make friends on line, not a friendship site anymore”

written by Somerville131 on 24/03/2014

i was a member for a long time a few years back and found it to be in the main pretty good in fact it was so good i even met my husband there.we both left tho for the same reasons stated by other reviewers.I received a begging email to re-join for free and as i met my husband there decided to rejoin to see what the place was like and see if i could catch up with some of the mates id lost touch with.all i can say now is that its probably great if the 6 people that is now the clique will let you in without being downright abusive, about your spelling or lack of it.or they let you post without acknowledging your there.initially to some they appear friendly but that's to make you think everyone is getting on then after a week or so the abuse and ignorance starts and this is ignored by admin, people have thread and posts removed without any warning on anything that can generate a proper and fruitful discussion dross and ego stroking is pretty much all you find.internal mail is terrible full of spammers and explicit offers of intercourse of a sexual nature, at first funny but are very persistent and become irritating.i got these despite the fact id mentioned on the boards and my profile that i am happily married and was just there to post, catch up with mates and have a laugh.some of the adverts are a pain too and are for seedy things like tai brides and a couple of the pics show girls who look worryingly under age. to be honest i wish i hadn't bothered and warn others to stay away.

“MFO takes no action on vulgarity and abuse on the site.”

★★☆☆☆

written by SandraLauer on 20/01/2013

I have been on the site for a few years now and have metsome people from there. But recently I got an abusive email from one of the users and so reported it to the administrators hoping they will do something about it. Unfortunately they took no action and left me thinking vulgarity and abuse are fine on there. They said they cannot control what is said in private emails. Is that the right attitude? Go ahead if you don't mind rude emails and poor service.

“Scammers United :)”

written by Hellfreezesover on 30/11/2012

Latest update of this appalling site. If you go to the site (you don't even have to log-in these days) and see the number of members that are online, they aren't actually all online as, if you have a look at some of the profiles, you can see they last logged in at least 18 hours previously. When Admin were asked about this, you get the standard response that the member probably hadn't bothered to log off. What happened to the usual thing of most sites that, if no activity was seen in the last 30 minutes/hour/2hours etc then you were automatically logged out. So obviously this gives a totally incorrect view of the site as new prospective members will think its a buzzing, lively place. Not true at all. Another thing to note: most of the profiles seem to have been 'poached' from other places as many of them have the same details, ie they are all calm, quiet etc and like restaurants, walks. Be wary of those of the age of 32 - they are all Aquarians and scammers. Look up any user name on the internet and, for the most part, you will see the name appear in many different places. Photos have also been acquired elsewhere - one is of a famous american actor/wrestler:) Do Admin do anything about this? Only if anyone bothers to report it, but you can't report the 100's that are there these days. One I managed to trace some way along the line - supposedly chinese in the UK. Profile in different areas but one site showed the email address. When this was searched you can guess where it originated from....yep Nigeria. So please, for your own sanity, stay away from this place. The owners also run a site in Ireland, and from this it appears that they have a site on the national TV station as well as the national newspaper. All sites are pretty identical and the same scammers appear on all.

“total rip off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by snowdrops100 on 04/07/2011

I joined the mfo site in January after being offered a months membership for £1.00. I thought I had nothing to lose. I use to be a member some years ago and had chatted to some lovely people back then. I couldn't believe how different the site had become and how rude and insincere some of the members were!! After a couple of weeks I removed my pic and profile. I asked mfo to stop sending emails etc. I never gave it another thought. I could not believe to my horror that a company called skystem ltd who apparently work with mfo have now taken 4 payments of £24.95 out of my account. apparently even though I had left and removed my profile, they decided to upgrade me(without my knowledge!!) Therefore it has cost me £100.00. I am now going to take it further as I believe this must have happened to alot of unsuspecting people, not just me. I am confident that watchdog will also be very interested. How utterly disgusting and misleading are these people!! Ann

I too am being ripped off by this company. I have tried to find a contact for them and failed. They hide behind a PO Box No and it's impossible to cancel a subscription. What the hell do we do? Have you been able to make any progress? Please let me know Thanks :-)

I used to be a member of MFO, 2004-2008 , and I thought it was a great site. I made many friends and met my man through MFO. The 'meets' were great fun, and I always felt that this was a 'friendship' site, rather than a 'dating' site. I even recommended it to friends. BUT....I found that the 'admin' did not protect me from abuse and insults on the boards, and the messages that I received, even though I reported them as offensive, were never dealt with appropriately. I was persuaded to join again, under new management, by a friend, assuring me that 'things had changed'. I rejoined for one hour !! Never again. RIP MFO...the concept was great and worked for a while, but you got too greedy at the expense of the members !!!

Excellent, so much better than the rubbish spin off sites that disgruntled ex members have flocked to form. I would recommend this site to all, there are no cliques and no totally ridiculous threads that the same old faces constantly comment on!! I wouldn't hesitate to say join this site and spend your time on the net with quality!

I joined MFO as it was a friendship site as well as a dating site and I was only interested in making friends. As a friendship site it was wonderful and although I wasnt looking, I met my husband through there. I stayed on after my marriage as I had friends there. Unfortunately it was taken over and the yearly fee went from £30 to £144 a year. As a non member couldnt see the message boards, people stopped joining for friendship and it became a dating site. I kept getting come ons even though my profile said married. Under new management I saw lots of my friends banned from the site and the new owners declined to reply if you asked them anything. I was sad to leave but really there wasnt an option..I dont want to date and really it is just a run of the mill dating site now.

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/07/2010

I was a member of MFO for over 8 fantastic years until the take over by its new owners when the site went rapidly downhill. I saw longterm friends being banned from the site for the most trivial of reasons and no response from the administration when asked why. This was followed by them being offered the chance to rejoin with a 500% increase in the membership fee.

It used to be a thriving community and a comfortable environment to make new friends and if that developed into something more, well, that was an added bonus.

The site lost its mission to become the friendliest site on the web the moment the new owners changed it to become purely about dating. In reality the only thing those changes have attracted is predatory visa-hunters and sexual creeps looking for a one-night stand.

I miss the old MFO. It didn't matter what time of day or night I logged on there was always a friendly face and some friendly banter.

I no longer use it and would tell anyone who came across it to run for the hills with their credit card.

written by on 10/07/2010

When I joined MFO in 2008 I felt i was in on a fantastic secret. I loved the meassage boards, which were lively and often had me in stitches. I made friends and dated on the site, which had regulars and a steady influx of newcomers. When the site changed hands I saw change, and things really fell apart, particularly for the message forum community who were sidelined. So for those who liked to get to know folk through interacting in a group/community, this facility became devalued and eventually most people left. I personally asked to leave after a new billing. Although i understand there to be a 14 day grace period for any such service, i was denied a refund, which I challenged unsuccessfully, leaving me with the certainty that the MFO site's practices are now legally questionable. Not recommended.

written by on 03/07/2010

Initially a very friendly site with interaction between members and those managing the site. Under it's new ownership of six months, the relationship deteriorated between the members and those running the site who became very dictatorial and underhand in the way they run the site, bannishing members for the most trivial of reasons and offering to reinstate them at a vastly inflated membership fee. It would appear that the new owners are out to fleece it's members for a very inferior service. Under no circumstances would I recomend anyone to join this site.

I found this review very helpful because...I used to be a member of MFO, I was looking for friendship and found it, but then the site became dictatorial so I left after many emails to the then 'admin' about abusive messages I had received and offensive post on the message boards that I had reported but the reports were 'never acknowledged !!. I had heard that it was under new management so I was considering returning, to use it as a 'friendship' site, but have, after reading this review and others, I will not be returning to MFO.

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/07/2010

Make Friends Online was a really great site, with lively conversations on the message boards, loads of interaction and tons of events organised by members. Went truly sour last year when new people took it over. Lots of games played with existing members - blocking people for fairly inoffensive comments (often to do with the fact that there was no response from admin about serious concerns/complaints), breaking their own rules by letting members make offensive comments about other members (and not responding to complaints about this but blocking complainants), increasing fees and refusing to honour loyalty concessions, previously agreed and blatantly moving away from being a friendship site to a hard-nosed dating site. I had to fight to have my profile removed despite not paying renewal fees and repeatedly requesting that it be removed. This has happened to many others and again seems a ploy to bump up the number of people they claim are active on their site. Would absolutely steer people away from this site!!!!

written by on 02/07/2010

I used to belong to MFO and found it a really good site for the message boards and the level of interaction that went on in them. The take-over last year has effectively destroyed the site, especially as it's no longer possible to read the message boards if you're not a paying member - how else can you tell if something's worth paying for if you can't see what you're missing?

MFO is trying to turn itself into a dating site only which, bearing in mind the amount of free dating sites and more specialised sites in this field already, is a big mistake IMO.
