This disgusting site for people wanting to meet others take advantage of people. They are con artists and channel 4 need to revisit this subject. I believe some action needs to be taken, especially if trading standards and the banks won't help, maybe they are getting in on the act too-having a cut from the dating site as they have now made 40 million in profit! I am obviously very anti dating sites now due to being stung by them and not being able to get my money back - £90.00. I am angry... (read more)

A few days ago, Channel Four News (UK) ran a credible item exposing a fake profile scam operated by Global Personals Ltd. Two former employees admitted the practice. Nearly a year ago I joined a site calling itself 'Classical Music Lover Dating', which turns out to be run by Global Personals Ltd. I have no direct evidence of there being fake profiles, but there were features of the site that aroused suspicion. For example, whenever I thought I'd paid to be a full member, there was something... (read more)

I believe channel four need to revisit this subject. I have been subjected to torture from this company - they are so unprofessional-they use white labelling to disguise how many dating sites they operate. I know they run the observer newspaper dating site amongst others-probably most of them tbh. I think they need to be taught a lesson and held responsible for the misery they cause innocent people. Trading standards are not doing a very good job-More people should stand up for their rights and complain about them. This show needs to stop now.

Channel Four News published a correction to this article as the practice that was described was stopped several years ago and the sole former employee that they interviewed left the company over four years ago.
When you pay to become a full member you get all the facilities and there is nothing else you need to pay for. We offer add-on services which you do not have to buy but they improve your experience on the site, but you are not obliged to buy them and should not impact on your ability to use the services.
Messages are generated by members and most of these will be personal i.e. member to member but we also offer an 'Ice Breaker' service to some members. We publicise this service clearly on the site, but we normally only make it available for use once because it is very effective at reaching a wide number of members.
To cancel is simple, call the freephone service advertised on the site during normal opening times and an adviser will do it for you.

I joined FunPie (one of global dating's many sites)a few days ago and in the first couple of days had several "private messages which I could not see unless I paid a membership. Like a mug I stumped up only to find the messages were generic contact from mainly eastern European females husband hunting or more like mug hunting. There is no such thing as a private message as literally everything has to pass through a moderator who edits out anything that is not acceptable to them IE criticism... (read more)

I'm sorry that you did not have the best experience on this site, but please let me comment on your review.
We have a team of moderators whose job is to keep inappropriate content of the site, and that includes anyone who appears to be non genuine. There are facilities on the site to report people who you suspect as being inappropriate, and we do not allow the kind of membership you describe.
We do not moderate all messages and yes there are certain things that moderators will remove, i.e. inappropriate content or language etc. but then if we didn't then we would also be open to criticism for allowing such things.
Of course we don't ignore requests to cancel, the instructions are quite simple and are found on the website. We work closely with Trading Standards to ensure that our sites are legal, fair and consistent.

How to get your money back from Global Personals / White Label Dating Who to contact first You can't usually report a trader directly to Trading Standards. This is because not all local offices offer a public service. However, Trading Standards has an agreement with Citizens Advice to help you report the problem. You can contact either: the Citizens Advice consumer service, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Experienced advisers will assess your problem and work out whether to pass... (read more)

We have a simple policy when it comes to refunds: If you are entitled to one we will give one and if you are not we will apologies and explain why. Our company policies are fully compliant with the law and trading regulations which are scrutinised quite fairly by the Trading Standards. If you find an entry from us on your credit/debit card that you do not understand try looking here: www.gpl-cc.com which will explain who we are and why you may have received a charge. Or contact us on support@globalpersonals.co.uk

Presumably your 'entitled to a refund' does not include refunding a penny to those who selected 1 month and got billed for 6. Nor does it include those people who signed up to read messages, only to find that they are either spammers, auto generated by your system, from fake profiles, or written by your staff? Nor does it include refunds to those who have had to endure a lamentable performance by your staff while they pretend to be someone who wants to chat, etc etc. Of course, the second anyone reads a message, fake or real, you define them as having 'made use of the system', and refuse to refund a penny. Well I got conned for £90, I selected 1 month, I spent a month looking at the drivel coming into my mailbox and then I rang up and cancelled it all. So, you have got my £90, even though I only selected 1 month, and even though I cancelled the account within the 1 month that I selected. Yes, you are within the law, but that does not make you an ethical business, nor one that I would want to do business with.

This is what has happened to me and many many more-channel 4 need to be highlighted to this scam. That is all it is and trading standards and the viza disputes at the banks need to be more sympathetic to this subject. Just because it is related to relationships and secrecy - perhaps shame and embarrassment for some - they know they can take advantage as many will not complain for fear of disclosure. That's oppression.

Exactly the same happened to me-I am still waiting months later for a refund. I just wonder how many other people have been taken advantage of? A few more responses will help this case and maybe we can try to expose them officially. I am waiting a reply from 'Rip of Britain; but I suspect they are VERY busy dealing with more collared criminals that operate all around us.

These people are plain crooks and are monopolizing eve n the banks. If we (society) are not more vigilant they will expand more and then there will be real trouble. Many people underestimate their greed and the terrible inflictions they cause innocent people by robbing them in broad daylight and ignoring all correspondence from them-all automated. They cause distress and anguish to many and it is about time they were taught a lesson.

Hi, you are sadly not alone. Try in the daytime as I know they close at night. I am sorry to hear another has been victimized. Don't waste your time asking your bank to help as they refused me twice. We stand alone in this no-one seems to care

The above reply is all lies. They will say anything to keep the money coming in -welcome to the nasty stages of this is the system of capitalism with the immoral market it has now produced. You have no time for pity, empathy, understanding or morals only time to take from not just innocent people but people who are genuine. You take advantage of nice people in a society that permits white collar crime as it in the name of capitalism. The truth is many people are willing to pay for a service if they are given the opportunity to choose. You take that privelidge from us and force us to buy your products which incidentally is a terrible service; one based on lies. You should really put your hands up and take some responsibility for the way you have taken thousands of innocent people and offer us our money back before this gets HUGE as I predict it will. This subject is not only sensitive but also emotive as it involves money, people who want anonyminity. Global personals know all this of course which is exactly why you behave in such a revolting way towards people.

If you spend time researching this company on the web you will find they have a habit of taking subscription money from people's accounts without their consent, not just one or two, or ten, but thousands. This happened to me. I couldn't get my money back from these people, who continued to take money from my bank after I asked them to cancel the account on on of their myriad of sites. I was for months being charged for their dating site when I had asked for it to be cancelled months earlier.... (read more)

We cannot take money from anyone's account without their consent. When you subscribe to one of our sites we make it clear that you are creating a repeat billing subscription that can be cancelled at any time by following the simple instructions on the website. If you receive a billing from us and want to know who we are and why a billing has appeared, visit this site: www.gpl-cc.com where we can explain why and what to do.
We also have a simple policy on refunds, which is that if you are entitled to one we will refund you and if not, you will receive an explanation as to why not, and we will never ignore you. I'm sorry that you have not had the best experience of one of our sites, but please let us clarify some of the issues you raise.
You cannot be a member of one of our sites unless you enter your details there. You cannot become a full member unless you pay and then you must enter all of the credit card information required to pay and that includes all the secure information you would normally need to subscribe or pay for any online service. This cannot happen by accident.
We offer a selection of subscription terms ranging from one month to twelve, all of which are repeat transactions in common with most subscriptions. You as the member select the length of the term and hence determine the cost. Obviously the longer the term the greater the initial outlay, but also the bigger the discount. If you paid £90, then you will have selected one of the longer terms.
The reason why your bank may seem unhelpful is because you have entered into a legal contract to pay for a service that you have used. However to cancel is simple, call the freephone service shown on the website during normal office hours and one of our advisers will cancel the account for you and no more money will be taken from you account.
Of course we are not 'con-artists' and Trading Standards do not 'get a cut', they regulate us to ensure that we are fair, consistent and operating within the regulations that we are bound by.
If you need any further assistance please contact us on support@globalpersonals.co.uk

Unfortunately what you say is not quite true. I had a trial period you offered me. I didn;t like the experience but made a friend who contacted me through 'reply for free' whereby they pay to have contact with you. This is called an add-on for the benefit of a non-paying basic member - as I was after my trial period ended. I was happy to stay on the basic member ship even though your company tried to entice me to commit to full membership. I was only trying to remove my profile one evening when the incident - I call it an incident as I feel a victim of crime you see. Your company took £89.85 straight out of my bank account. It is still-two months later in dispute. You sent all my personal details including images of me from my profile to my bank-how humiliating. Now I believe you are in breach too of not adhering to data protection regulations- You are unprofessional. I have tried endlessly to contact you but receive only automated replies-Oh but this is now a different ball game on here isn't it? hm. I contacted you immediately after you stole my money , that your terms and conditions statesone can cancel within 24hrs. You ignored me. Read your own information from your site-this is what applied to me before you made me a full member-before you took my right to choose away from me:- As a basic member you can create your profile and upload a photo, use search to find members who match your search criteria, wink at those you like the look of, send an Ice Breaker to introduce yourself to others and read other members' diary entries. This gives you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the way the site works and see if the site is right for you, before committing any further. You can stay as a basic member for as long as you like, with no obligation to pay - until you decide you want to of course!
Now my bank (Nationwide) is aware of this case I met with my bank manager yesterday and they are looking at it seriously as I have contacted RIP OF BRITAIN about you. He agrees with me and is ashamed of your actions and wants not to be associated with you whatsoever.

You say that people must cancel a member AT LEAST 72 HOURS before the end of the period. BUT the trial period is on 72 hours long! So, you alleged "easy to cancel" trial period is impossible to cancel. It is quite simply a lie. You say we must cancel via phone numbers that never get answered. Why can't we do it online? Why doesn't a note to your support team do as cancellation. All you support team do (if they actually exist) is send the same repetitive nonsense that doesn't answer the question. Well, GlobalPersonals...I simply cancelled my card and you didn't get paid!

For clarity's sake, let me just confirm please that Globalpersonals (this is a white label) meaning they own many other sites etc re: dating, they already had a record of my bank details from my previous contact with them - the trial. They abused this fact and took money without my authorization-this is the point I am ultimately trying to make

Hello, thanks for you comment. That's not good is it. I also know of other people this has happened to. Most people won't discuss as it has an element of embarrassment and shame attached to the issue of being single and wanting to find a partner. Of course this is natural and most humans feel they need other people to share their life with. What makes me quite frustrated is when global personals or whatever name they hide under are take advantage of people's situation as they know that a high proportion of the GP will not take action, even blame themselves for being on the site in the first place. I do hope that more people have access to this site here and maybe with collaboration this unfair system of trading can be stopped

hi-yes you MUST cancel the card that is what \i did immediately. I am still angry too. But they will continue this facade if they get away with it. Just copy and paste them-click and drag-that should work-OR take photos of the text, I do that sometimes. sure something will work-good luck
