sjb86's review of Vanquis Bank Credit Card

“Im now FREE.... Avoid Vanquis if you value sleeping.”

I applied for a Vanquis card in 2007 and got it with a £250 limit with an Apr of 39.9. Shocking I know but with a £250 limit it didnt seem too bad to try and handle to get my credit rating up. 3 years went by of not really any issues just allowed them to take the direct debit. 2010 credit limit increase, great went up to £1000. What I didnt notice was that the Apr went up to 59.9. According the Vanquis as soon as I spent on the card after the increase I agreed to the new terms. Jan 2011 increased to £2000 , June 2011 increased to £2500, Sept 2011 they put it up again to £3000 even though this was not 6 months from the last review of my account. If you get up towards your £3000 limit you will be paying around £140 a month, you may think this isnt too bad but if I then said it would take you around 60 - 70 years to pay the debt off, you may now begin to see the problem. I was really .... what the word .... STUPID when I took this card out as they advised me I had agreed to their so called ROP repayment option plan which once they explained it to me in 2012 seems like something any responsible lender would do anyway, yet Vanquis charge a percentage of the outstanding balance just for the ROP which seemed to cost me around £30 a month. I never checked my statements again stupid I know, When I questioned this ROP the person at the end of the phone started to get very rude and told me I get nothing back from them even though they cant tell me how they sold this product to me. They seemed to have set up this very clever product to get around the new rules regarding PPI. Provident are behind Vanquis and a couple of other cards, now why would they need to hide behind a different name if Provident was so well known for their lending pratices. They trap people with low credit scores so they cant get out as low rate cards are not avaliable to people with low rating so you cant move the debt anywhere and you cant pay it off at the high rates they charge.

All you had to do was call them and cancel the ROP. I did.
