The rotary action is a big improvement on blades. In contrast with other reviews, I have found the machine completely dependable. It makes an excellent espresso and with a change of setting good filter coffee as well. don't know about service but Dualit usually requires one to bring them the machine which is a nuisance.

Adjustable grind which can easily be adjusted to a fine grind for expresso. Nice big hopper for storing beans and good-sized output box for ground coffee. You can also take the grinding mechanism apart and is easy to clean which I do about once a year if I remember.Of course we only make the equivalent of cups of expresso a day.Excellent price for a burr grinder.
Clockwork timer works well when you get use to it.
Much better than the blade grinders which damage the beans.
Excellent value for money for normal use not professional.

Bad Points

Vibration can change grind setting.Sticky tape easily solves this problem.
Vibration also can cause the output box to move. Not a big problem.

“Odd little machine. Dualit Coffee has a massive...”

Odd little machine. Dualit Coffee has a massive motor, but design flaws just don't seem to make it worth the price. Had one for £8 that worked great for years, then forked out a lot for this "gourmet" model and like it much less. Design badly flawed. Cup for grounds sits loosely below grinder, and slowly works its way out of the machine as it vibrates during the grind process, leaving grounds everywhere. Even when you hold the cup in place during operation, finely ground coffee falls between cup and housing so when cup is removed, it leaves grounds all over the counter. Cup is also very small, while container for whole beans is very large. Very easy to grind too much coffee, so when cup is removed... you guessed it... grounds all over the counter. Within a few months of use, grinding timer stuck in "on" position, so must turn on and off using mains switch. Finally, can they not build one of these things with a muffler or silencer so you don't wake up the household trying to get a cup of coffee? This one is so loud, I end up grinding large amounts on weekends when everyone's awake and then storing it. This pretty much defeats the purpose of buying whole beans in the first place.

The retailer exchanged a faulty (cheaper) Krups model with this Dualit and I have to say that it is far superior in all respects. The clockwork duration operation seems quirky at first, but this and the adjustment for the fineness of grind both work very well indeed. Copes better than most with oily high-roast beans as they flow unassisted out of the hopper. As a coffee enthusiast, I am very happy with this purchase " so much so I have bought another for the other house we use.

After a while it would grind away, but nothing came through. I tried shaking it (some improvement) and rotating the hopper (sometimes worked). This got worse and worse until eventually (after about 4 years) it stopped. When I sent it to Dualit for repairs they said it could not be fixed! Not recommended.

Great for entry level coffee espresso machine. I got a very good espresso with a good crema using this grinder on my old Morphy Richards £100 machine. Very small footprint and looks great next to my coffee machine. I often use it on coarse setting for my cafetier and it work great for this. For £60 I think the Dualit Coffee Grinder is value for money.

written by henrymoore on 24/08/2004

Dualit Coffee - I have had one of these machines for two years, and the long-term ownership story is not so good. Initially the machine was reasonably efficient, but after a few months, performance really dropped. I managed to pull the machine apart and clean the grinding surfaces, which by that time had got pretty clogged. Cleaning the grinding surface restored the performance for a while but performance quickly dropped off again after a few grinds. I give the machine fairly heavy use, but I still think this isn't worth the extra money over a simple blade grinder - which will be (generally) considerably quieter and much quicker. You can also buy this machine from Starbucks, where it's sold under a different name.

“I like Dualit equipment. Good and sturdy and well...”

I like Dualit equipment. Good and sturdy and well made? I thought I'd bought a quality piece of equipment when I bought this Dualit coffee grinder. For the first four weeks it was great. However, after that it started to have trouble grinding beans. The wheels whirred away but no coffee came out! The only way I could make it grind was to shake it from side to side as it ground!

There is a safety device built into the grinder which causes the grinding wheels to stop grinding if a stone gets in there via the beans. I think that this was too sensitive and the problem was caused by the safety device treating coffee beans as stones. Anyway, I took it back and got a replacement today, which I'm hoping will last a lot longer. If this one doesn't break, I'd be happy with the grinder because it is a solid piece of equipment that is fully and easily adjustable, catches all the grinds nicely and looks great.

Now had my replacement for nearly two years. I've used it almost every day and it's still going strong.
