“Chain thrower”

★★☆☆☆

written by tdMueller465 on 09/04/2015

I have the same problem that a lot of others are having. Took it to the dealer and of course he said it was the bar. New bar, new chain. It doesn't matter. I have looked at other Husky's and they have guide plates in them the same as my Homelite. Seems to be an engineering flaw. I have heard the "you must be doing something wrong" the same as others. That way worked fine for the last 35 years. When the chain comes off and wraps around your leg it pulls out chunks of meat. No problem there yet. It grew back. No help from Husqvarna. I am a bit disappointed in them. Starts and runs good. Plenty of power. You just can't use it.

I've cut for over 120 hours with my Husky Rancher and never have I had a chain come off the bar. Follow the instructions in the owners' manual (get it online), and you'll not have a problem. I'm 72 years old, and if I can do it, you can do it too!

“bar ,chain and sprocket”

★★☆☆☆

written by macfish on 13/05/2014

Chains run out of adjustment in 2 hours, new bar and sprocket oiler works bar tip lubricated (yes right size chain correct tension same results with different mfg chains. Why does it eat bars and chains. Last chain was 3/4 inch longer than new after 45 minutes. The bar needs to be longer than the standard 20 inch or the chain shorter. Costs to much to keep it running

“This saw has an oiler problem, bigtime”

★★☆☆☆

written by Rudy83 on 26/03/2014

I purchased the saw, Husqvarna 455 Rancher about three years ago. I used it once for about an hour. Drained the gas tank and ran until engine quit for storage. Several months later I had another job for it so I took the saw out of the case and all the oil had leaked out of the saw. Messy !! I then decided that when I would put the saw away in it's case I would drain the oil. However, that was very inconvenient. Recently I bought oiler parts for the 455 from ereplacement parts on line. I replaced the two oil tubes which was not easy on the one in the crankcase. Lo and behold it still leaks, just as before. This is a manufacturing problem and after all this time now I am saddled with the saw and oiler problem. This oil problem with the 455 is not just a little oil leakage after use, which happens with many chainsaws, but a definite problem. 03/24/14

“saw leaks oil”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 02/06/2013

I received this saw as a gift last October and fired it up last weekend for the first time. However the saw leaked excessive oil in the carry case. Made sure the cap was tight and cleaned up the mess. The saw leaks oil. I've worked with Stihl and never had an issue like this. The dealer says, they won't take it back because their 30 day warranty is up and they have it for "repairs". This is in the shop brand new and never cut a log. After reading some of the reviews here I'm not sure I even want this saw.

I bought mine on Amazon 2 years ago. Love it when it works. My chain also jumps off and have the same problem with the teeth. Last week it quit. Can't get any spark. Never had a saw with those two problems. But I still like the saw.

I have had this exact problem. I have been using chainsaws in various sizes and brands for 25+ years. I understand maintenance, chain tension, etc. I have probably not got 2 hours run time on the Husky 455 and the chain has derailed twice, both times chewing up the chain guides such that I had to replace. First time it happened, I figured it was bad luck. Within 5 minutes of running the saw today, after replacing chain, it came of again, and, again, ruined the chain. This is extremely aggravating as I was extra careful about tension and proper mounting, and use of saw. I am going back to Stihl brand. I never had this problem with the 041 Farm Boss I had for 20+ years. Yes, the chain would occasionally come off, but it would not get destroyed.

“Good engine, bad chain oiler, sprocket.”

★★★☆☆

written by Mike5164 on 25/02/2013

I run husky's. I think they are the best pro forestry saws going, for the XT models. I use the 390xt, the 575xt, 372xt and 346xt. I bought a 455 because it was 1/3 the price of the pro models, $300 vs $1000. It has a very strong motor, starts good, and for a $300 saw, cuts fast. However, this is the best example of you get what you pay for. The chain oiler is cheap junk, the sprocket is junk. It costs more to put this saw to work than any other I have because it eats up chains and bars and sprockets. $21.+ $32. +$40 + a trip to town = about $100 a month x 12 = I should have bought another 372xt instead of the 455. The 455 is a good saw, but will not hang for a logger. For a backyard/home owner, firewood, they would probly think it's the worlds fastest and best saw. It will work just fine for a once a week saw. Husky could a home run with with this saw if they would put a good oiler and sprocket on it.

“455 rancher with 18 3/8 bar”

★★☆☆☆

written by tk598 on 23/01/2013

This is a poor saw , first off when i first got it the chain break broke on it . then the chain was falling off all the time. I fixed that by buying a after market bar. The bar the saw comes with is the wrong one. So after i got that fixed with the new bar i was having problems with it getting hot and boiling the fuel so when i shut it off i would not start again into it cooled off. And another thing you have to keep the air filter super clean or i will not run. for the money i spent i could of got a sthil and had no problems at all

“Great saw for the land owner.”

★★★★☆

written by on 13/01/2013

I bought this chain saw two years ago, and have cut plenty of trees, and logs for firewood since then. I've had no troubles with parts except one, and the chain has never come off by itself. It has plenty of power, and cuts like butter. There seems to be one problem however. At times if the chain break is on when you shut it off you can't remove the cover to clean the chain saw, or replace the chain. Unfortunately I didn't know about this defect until I had to purchase a new cover. I only learned about this defect by going online, and finding out about the problem. Now I simply restart the saw, disengage the chainbreak, shut it down then remove the cover/faceplate. It would have been nice if I knew about this before I paid to fix the problem once, and then afterwards had to buy a replacement part the second time.

“Chain slings off and damages chain.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/11/2012

Recently bought a 455 Rancher. Saw starts fairly easy, but I have used it twice and it slings the chain which results in the chain being damaged each time. I have run the saw twice and I have had to return it each time to get it repair or buy a chain. I have been running chainsaw 30 years and have never seen anything like it. Local dealer won't do anything about it. I have always used a Stihl saw up until this point and was convinced by the dealer that the Husqvarna was the better saw. Just went and bought a new Stihl saw. Used the Stihl cutting down a number of trees and did not have the first problem with any part of the Stihl saw. So, buyer beware of Husqvarna saws.

I had the same problem with mine. Took it to a repair shop and he replaced the bar witht he oregon 20" bar which is a little bit wider at the eye holes. After this I had no problem with the chain coming off again. I hope this helps you.

“Chain Oiler Pinion gear CHEAP PLASTIC PART Failed 3...”

★★☆☆☆

written by sescadman on 15/07/2012

What a letdown. Bought this expensive saw at Lowes a year ago used it for 3 hours run time and the oil pump pinion ( a CHEAP PLASTIC PART) is totally stripped. No more oil to the bar and chain so no good for anything else but to listen to the powerful engine sound. I think Husqvarna needs to recall that part because there is no way it will hold up over time. Had I not used their bar oil or if I had let the reservoir run dry I might blame myself for this part failing but I cant. Went to Husqvarna web site for parts, and OK it's only $3.42 to replace the pinion; but the shipping of this part that weighs no more than a 2 litre soda cap costs $11.50 to ship. SHAME ON YOU HUSQVARNA

“What a disapointment.”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 22/10/2011

This was the first higher dollar saw I had ever purchased. Right out of the box it was great. I was zipping through logs and trees like a hot knife thru butter. With very little to no vibration, I was impressed. Then the chain came off. The sprocket stripped out the drive teeth on the chain and the chain managed to rip up the metal protector plate on the inside of the saw. OK...maybe I did something wrong????. Checked the sprocket, put on a new chain, adjusted the tension just right, double checked everything and went back to cutting. Once again, I was in heaven, zipping away. Then the chain flew off again doing more damage. Needless to say, 6 months later, I now own a husqvarna piece of trash. To think I could have bought 4 Poulons with that money and probably still have 2 brand new ones left by now. I will say this though, the chain speed and the low vibe was great when the chain stayed on. I'm going to try out a high dollar Stihl. I hope I have better luck.

“Husqvarna 455 RANCHER BAD DEAL BUYER BEWARE OF THIS MFGR”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bryank450 on 27/08/2011

I was the original owner of this saw. Worked ok for the 1st 6 months, then the black oxide machine screws which hold the muffler to the aluminum block started to vibrate out, after re-tightening enough times the threads on the aluminum block stripped out-bad news-Design Flaw!!!!! By the time the screws stripped out the threads the saw was out of warranty. The guys at the factory have no mercy and were rude. There is a fix using an insert but the insert just backs out, even with high temp. red loctite. BAD, BAD company. Will never buy another Husqvarna or anything related to them nor recommend them to anyone.

When I first bought the saw it worked great. It is now 3 years old and after the first year it became extremely hard to start cold. Once it starts it works great. I have changed the fuel filter, air filter, and adjusted the carb numerous times but still can't get it started in cold weather without keeping it in the house or under the truck heater. I was told by a dealer the only way to adjust the carb right would be to remove the adjustment limiters on the L & H adjustment screws. Great saw in warm weather but lousy in cold weather starts. This is the third 455 I have heard of with this problem since buying, wish I had known before.

I just sawed up a 30+ inch hickory for firewood, which as you know is a HARD tree. No complaints. Not a fan of the safty chain but the saw seems to have plenty of power for anything the small time logger/ homeowner would put it to.

written by on 02/12/2010

This is a review of a 455 Rancher. It has a decompression valve for easy starting, but I didn't need it. I just filled the saw with two-stroke fuel and chain oil, pumped the bubble about eight times until I saw fuel in it and put the choke on full. l did about three pulls until I heard a pop and then went to half choke and it started on the next pull. I let it run for about 30 seconds, took it off half choke and started cutting.

Cutting went for an hour and a half with one stop in the middle to cut up a 16" Ash that was knoched down in an ice storm. This saw goes through Ash like butter. I was considering a 240E instead of this saw but now I'm really glad I bought the Rancher. I would have fought several more hours to get that Ash down with a smaller saw. Also, the chain oiler seems to work just fine on this saw. That was a fairly common complaint with other Husky owners who reviewed different saws I looked at.

A 455E is a different saw. There are a lot of complaints I've read about the 455E and the "easy adjust' device that they use to attach the bar on that saw. The standard 455 has two nuts and bolts that hold the bar on the saw. This is the same setup I had on my old Homelite and that saw worked for 20 years without issue. I figure this saw will last me the rest of my life. If it were lost or stolen, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

This saw is a replacement for a twenty year old Homelite 330 that decided to die. The 455 Rancher is at least as good if not better.

The Husqvarna 455 Rancher is a great chainsaw! I own a landscape maintenance company, and we use ours daily! With normal chain tightening and maintenance ( adding bar oil, sharpening chains, etc.) this saw should last for years! Ours has, and I'm so pleased with the performance I 'm going to buy another after this review! Rain, shine, dirt, dust, or sand this is the saw to purchase.

I FOUND THIS SAW TOO BE VERY NICE TO A NEW CHAIN BUT AFTER IT TO GET IT TO CUT AGAIN IT WAS VERY HARD AND I CUT IN THE WOODS FOR YEARS THIS IS A GREAT POWER HEAD UNIT I LIKED IT A LOT JUST NO WAIT TO RATION BALANCE ON IT . IF YOU AFTER A GOOD HERE AND YHERE SAW THEN THE 455 RANCHER IS THERE FOR YOU. NOT A LIVING SAW. GREAT VALUE FOR THE BUCK.

written by on 25/04/2010

I am using the saw to cut mostly medium to large maple and alder. The saw runs great, always starts on the first or second pull. I am careful to keep debri from falling into bar oil resevoir and have had no lube troubles. I only use fresh gas.

My only complaint is the life of the chain. It does not seem to last very long before the chipping turns to fine sawdust. I even had the chain professionally sharpened. Stihl has many chain performance options but I can't say I have found the same thing with husky. I have heard some get good results by using a Stihl chain. This is not a practice that is officially recognized by Husky or by Stihl and i am reluctant to try it.
