Went for an Easter Sunday evening meal to the Bracknell Harvester. As usual, had to wait almost an hour to be seated. This seems to happen every time I go to a Harvester. Okay on this occasion we were a party of seven, but on a visit to the loo while waiting we could clearly see several 2 seat and 4 seat tables free even though parties of 2, 3, and 4 were being made to wait as well. The bar was nearly empty and the restaurant itself was far from full when we were seated so it is not like they couldn't have pushed a couple of tables together to accommodate us. Indeed when we did sit down there was a table for 8 right next to ours that was empty. Having already chosen our food while we were waiting (what else is there to do but read and re-read the menu?) and told them we were ready to order straight away, it still took 40 mins for the food to arrive, during which time of course you have filled yourself up with so much salad and refill drinks that you can't manage it all anymore. How long does it take to cook seven pieces of chicken, especially when you are not even that busy? Since everyone haws either chips or rice, can't they have a load cooking all the time? The glass of house wine my wife had was undrinkable, having clearly been opened far too long. A surly faced woman informed us there were no white bread rolls, only brown. For about 15 minutes of actual eating time we were there for 2 full hours, and frankly bored stiff by the end of it.
Yes their prices are very reasonable, but no better than, say, the Wetherspoons in Wokingham we went to the night before where the service was absolutely brilliant, and seven quite different dishes, beautifully presented and delicious, were produced in about 10 minutes flat, and no waiting to be seated.
From the quietness of the place on a holiday evening, I think the public is beginning to have had quite enough of Harvester's "make 'en wait they will just buy more drinks" attitude and poor service. Certainly I and my family have, and we won't be going back to a Harvester in a hurry.
