Cleaned carpet but left a smell

I have just bought a Vax Powermax cleaner as I have a dog who lays on the carpet behind the sofa. the day I bought it the dog was sick so I tried the cleaner out on the area after initially cleaning up the mess. After I had cleaned the carpet it was still quite wet and smelled like a wet dog. I rang Vax who were very helpful and recommended their own shampoo for homes with pets. I rinsed the area twice with the machine using clear water and when it had dried I used bi carbonated of soda on it. The smell has gone now but I am worried about using the machine on the rest of the carpets
