Since Halfords took over the Nationwide franchise, which was backed by the AA, the service has deteriorated and I do not think it could get much worse. Needless to say I understand the AA are not involved any more.

The AA came out to my car when it did not start and suggested it was the starter motor. Bump started it fine and took it to Halfords. Monday morning spoke to Halfords and I stated it possibly needed a new starter motor. No problem they said should not take long. ON THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY phoned them up to see if they had done anything. They did not contact me all week to advise me of progress or of any problems. Guy on the phone stated they had changed the starter motor but it did not solve the starting problem and I would need to take the car to a specialist auto electrician as they had tried but did not know of a solution.

Asked the AA to attend and Halfords to leave the car outside their premises. Arranged for Monday morning 8:30am. Luckly the AA guy who showed up was a VW specialist who immediately identified the problem as an ignition switch. Bump started the car with ease to take it to a local VW specialist. Only managed 100 yards though as Halfords had disconnected the brake servo!! Nice one! Good job the handbrake worked as I would have gone straight over a busy junction! VW specialist fixed the car within a day but pointed out when I picked it up that Halfords had disconnected the starter motor and left live leads. Lucky it did not cause a car fire on the way! It also cost about £100 extra to put right Halfords errors.

Would I use them again? I don't think so. Maybe they can do an oil change but why bother as their "mechanics" may forget the drain plug!!

I should have realised they were going downhill as the year before when the car went in for the MOT and annual service they said it needed a new gear box. They would happily have put one in and nearly 2 years later the gear box is still fine!
