“Misleading quotes, rude staff and arrogant regional...”

My partner visited a Halfords Auto Centre in Bath for an MOT. The car passed the MOT but had a few advisory items. One of which was the rear tyres being just over the legal limit. The branch manager called my partner with a quote of £50 + £10 fitting. As this seemed a reasonable price for 2 fitted tryes, she decided to go ahead and have the work carried out. When she went to collect the vehicle, she was presented with a bill of £125.54. When she questioned this she was met with 4 blokes demeaning her and suggesting that the quote was clear that the price was per tyre. This seems very odd, why would the guy quote for 1 tyre when he was replacing 2, surely you would need to state per tyre? There was also a few hidden extra charges: Wheel Balancing £6.99 per wheel, new valve £1.99 per tyre and £2.00 per tyre for disposing the old ones. As a young professional, my partner paid the bill and left upset that she had been scammed by Halfords.

Rather than accept this, I carried out a bit of research by getting quotes for 2 tyres from several other halfords garages and all quoted the price of one tyre. Only when you question the price, they divulge that the price is per tyre. I decided to bring this to the attention of the regional manager, who appeared to be a recently promoted mechanic with very little customer service skills. His attempt to resolve this was to call us back and say that the branch manager has informed him that he did say that this price was per tyre. A 'Computer says No' approach.

I suppose the moral of the story is to always assume that when a mechanic senses an opportunity to rip-off a young woman, he more often than not will. It's a shame that it has come to requiring a written quote from a garage to get the agreed price. For people wishing to get their tyres replaced, go to Able Fit, they quoted a price of £64.00 fitted for 2 replacement tyres, compared to the £125.54 sold by Halfords!
