Recently went into Bentleys Toyota Warrington looking to replace the car of a family member, which had sustained some damage to assess whether to have it fixed and then part-ex or see what they offer.
List price around £4000 without damage.
Salesman looked at the car and took photos of the damage and said he would send them to their body shop. Got his manager out of the office and when we left the building we had shaken hands and agreed that the MINIMUM to part-ex was £3000 against an agreed car, but if their own body shop (which you assume would be cheaper for them than me) said it would be less, they would give us the difference.
We then looked to financing the deal and funding the difference on this basis.
We had to chase them the next day and eventually the salesman told us that their body shop quoted £2000 to put it right and therefore they would only give us £2000 in part-ex.
Not only a breach of contract by verbal agreement and the handshake but no doubt due to 1) the car we were buying was a bargain and may have been priced wrong. 2) Dealing with woman. 3) Trying to make a fast buck.
Had words with the manager who was totally disinterested and dismissive.
Got the car repaired, to very high standard (have the receipt) at £800.
