“Trading Standards will be informed of this...”

Booked my Subaru Legacy in to ATS Euromaster Carlisle to have a double cat fitted. Quoted by staff £256 fitted. Not a bad price. Dropped the car in to them at 3.15 this afternoon. About 4.20 received a call from staff to say there was a problem. Two lambda sensors contained within the part to be replaced had threaded while they were being extracted and could no longer be used. Cost to replace them - something over £300. So a job which was originally to cost £256 was now going to cost the guts of £600. And the car wasn't going to be ready that afternoon as the new sensors would have to be ordered. So rang my wife to ask her to come in to Carlisle to pick me up - a journey of 16 miles. Rang staff of ATS back to tell him that since the sensors had been rendered unserviceable while they had my car I considered ATS should pay to have them replaced. Staff said he would have to check the situation with his managers. My wife arrived to drive me home. At 5.25 staff rang to say the car was ready for collection. He said he had had the sensors rethreaded at a local engineering firm. This was apparently accomplished so quickly after I told him I was holding ATS responsible for the replacement sensors. I will never know if the sensors had been damaged in the first place. But I do know that if they were damaged an attempt was made to extract £300+ from me when a cheaper alternative - namely rethreading - was apparently available. And I know my wife had a needless and lengthy journey to Carlisle this afternoon. I also know I won't be going near ATS Carlisle again, and that Trading Standards will be appraised of this incident on Monday.
