I left Tesco insurance cancelled the insurance as we had a better quote. but they still don't get the message the direct debit was cancelled and keeps reappearing (we keep cancelling it) constant post from them saying we have outstanding insurance payments we ring up we send another set of papers back, really fed up it was on automatic renewal, we didn't realise but even though we try everything to cancel it bounces back, we told them in plenty of time to cancel but back it bounces....

I would speak to your bank.
No way should a direct debit be placed on your account that is cancelled.
