I went with Tesco because they were the cheapest quote by quite a long way (ie £200+). Previously, I had been with Direct Line for about 3 years (and had fairly poor service over a not-at-fault claim), and Churchill before that.
With Tesco, had a not-at-fault claim, where basically someone veered into us. It was eventually settled in our favour (rightly), but we had to repeatedly chase Tesco for the required paperwork. We also had a couple of problems with the hire car process too- again the emphasis seemed to be on us contacting them to sort everything out, not vice-versa. They were not forthcoming with information, although to be fair the call centre staff were pleasant enough.
After complaining a bit, they agreed to give us one month free if we renewed, so we did (April 2011) as it was still the cheapest. Incidentally- when the time comes to renew, select the option- "press 2 if you're thinking of leaving us" for extra prompt service and discounts!
Basically it seems that all insurance companies are pretty poor- I've never known a good one and I notice most of them don't get more than two stars on this website. They are mostly underwritten by the same companies anyway. Just go with whoever is cheapest and expect that they will let you down- that way you won't be disappointed!
