After choosing Hastings from a comparison website as it was the only insurance company on the list I knew of, I was ok with the price of the insurance because I knew the price for girls insurance had gone up so I was expecting a price rise from my last insurance quote (but not a £1000 rise like I was quoted from another company!). Other than the price which was much more reasonable but still a lot more because of the rise, they were quick and easy to work with! Luckily I havnt needed to... (read more)

Recently renewed with them for a second year the first time ever my car insurance was not increased from the previous year. They even improved the policy via vandalism and uninsured driver cover. I have not been unfortunate enough to make a claim yet but have always found their call centre helpful, and on the ball when discussing matters both when taking the policy out and on renewal with minor amendments to my policy. In 2012 Hastings Direct took over £50 out of our bank account because they thought a speeding fine of 3 points was still valid from 2007. The letter saying they were taking the money arrived weeks after the account was debited. Just try to get them to return your calls, let alone the money. Phone calls, emails, recorded delivery post - nothing seems to work. Staggeringly poor after-service. (read more)

Don't touch these guys - if you think this is bad try maknig a claim as a named driver - they will only talk to the policy holder. they then moan to the policy holder that the named driver cant be contacted.
They put barriers in the way of getting claims processes and will add an extra £1000 to your excess
They are more interested in getting you to sign finance agreements for repairs and hire cars than processing the claim yes we have fully comprehensive insurance but will not fix the car until we sign an open ended (no amount stated)
They promise a hire car then don't deliver
this is the future in 2012 so I think that thiings cannot possibly have been worse pre 2009

Did they give you any reason as to why you have no insurance?? Was it from renewal? Or was it a quote you had only just taken out.. was it done over the phone or the internet and who was the underwriter.. As for the idiot you spoke to on the phone, the world is full of people like that whatever company its with.. you should have told her to improve her attitude because at the end of the day your the customer, she is supposed to give you the polite service as your paying for it!! .. I work at Hastings Direct and just wondered what they said as calls are NEVER EVER EVER transferred through to underwriting.
Written on: 03/08/2007
I eventually found out that I WAS insured, and the problem was that Hastings Direct had failed to enter my registration details onto the national database.

I had to phone so many different people that I can't remember the details of them all. Amongst the calls I made was one to the organisation that maintains the database and they were able to help me to sort out the problem with Hastings Direct.

The female in Customer Services at Hastings Direct who told me to ring C.I.S insisted that they were the organisation responsible for the initial data entry. C.I.S completely contradicted what she told me - and put me back to Hastings Direct!

I found the Hastings Direct staff (in the main) to be unhelpful and disinterested. They gave the impression of being very badly trained.

When my insurance comes up for renewal I most certainly go elsewhere.

National Database? All we do is add reg details onto the Hastings system it isn't actually our responsibility about anything beyond that. As long as we have the correct make, model and reg number - whether it appears on the police database or not you are still LEGALLY insured.. CIS are not an EDI company (EDI meaning they deal with everything in their own site), so I don't understand why she made you call CIS because we deal with anything to do with them, and she should have phoned you back. I'm sorry you had a bad customer service experience. The call centre is filled with over 800 people and it sounds like she was in training to be honest. If you would like I will check over your policy next time i'm working and give you a ring and we can discuss the policy and I can double check over the notepads that the agents have left so I can see what was going on.
If a car is beyond repair, that's it. There is no 'more economical' way, it's written off. This isn't a fault of Hastings Direct car insurance.
Written on: 24/11/2006
Although you say that the car is written off, this is no economic way to repair. I had talked with their repair department, and they did tell me that if they know it earlier, they would have considered another way to arrange. But it was too late, as Hastings Direct car insurance cannot put back the code from written off to repair section.

I am not angry that they consider it to be written off, but I do get angry with their missing communication and mishandling during the claim, as there is no communication between each department and outside independent company. No body knows what is happening and they don't follow up. If they are a good insurance company, they should take care of the claim on behalf of the customer, not the customer take care of it themselves!!

I did send them the documents for review, and they did agree to amend the value, and now I have got a replacement car. Unfortunately, they lost my possession in my old car, and now they are starting to try to sort it out.
Firstly I can assure you that Hastings do send out renewal notices. Also, how can you possibly not have noticed that money had been debited from your account for a year. They are also willing to refund money if a policy is renewed in error, all it usually takes is a fax.
