I purchased an online car insurance policy on the 7th April 2011 and whilst away working abroad they sent two letters requeting proof of no claims and also a copy of my licence or they would cancel within 7days. I did not get back from abroad until the 12th May which was too late to stop them cancelling the policy. I returned the certificate to them and awaited a refund of my premium which I paid up front, a total of 406.41. I expected to receive this back less a 75 pound cancellation fee and less the cover received of 5 weeks. Today the 10th June they returned the poultry sum of 91.48 so they kept 314.93 of my money for this. I have sent a complaint to watchdog as the only contact number on the letter with the cheque is a 0900 number at 1 pound a minute, meaning I will have to pay them even more money to resolve. I have emailed them and await their full breakdown of charges which they did not provide me with. This is disgusting treatment of a customer.

I had a similar experience and will also be writing to the FSA and Watchdog to report this outrageous behaviour. They also owe me somewhere in the region of £300.

I recently contacted ASDA as we had a policy with them, but wanted to change the vehicle. They came back and told us that they were unable to insure the new vehicle and so they were asked to cancel the policy. After not recieving my Proof of No Claims to send to my new insurers I sent them an email. I was told that cancelation had to be done online, which is now 2 weeks down the line- and on cancelation I have had a refund of NIL. I paid this insurance in full and will never do so again as they then have the ability to keep as much of your money as they wish, and they can make up all sorts of costs when in actual fact, it is their fault that they couldnt insure the new vehicle!!!!! Rubbish. Never again!
