“discrimination against musicians in car insurance”

Written on: 11/04/2012 by DDick-Fish (1 review written)

I've been with the AA for 2 years, registered on my car insurance policy as a musician.I'd always found it tough getting insurance because of my occupation. Most of the time I travel to gigs I am on a tour bus or driven very rarely using my own vehicle. However "musician/singer" is my occupation.
Last week I receive a registered letter telling me they will not be renewing my policy at the end of April.
I phone to discover the reason and am told it is because I am a musician and the underwriters no longer cater for my profession. No compromise.
I then go to a "Compare" site and first two "offers" and cheapest come from the AA who call withing minutes to discuss.
I tell the young lady my story and that they don't insure musicians. She offers to put me through to the "next level" and a guy comes on the phone to tell me they do insure musicians and that my policy had gone over the "points scoring" because I had 2 other musicians as named drivers. ( a guitarist and keyboard player who sometimes do gigs with me and we occasionally share driving back from shows). I was told if I removed them they could insure me and quoted me £400 - £150 more than last year!!
I was told the reason for the expensive quotes is that I could be driving "celebrities" around!!!

I 54 years old, had a clean license since I passed in 1976 and over 15 years of no claims.

Why do musicians have to suffer the "shotgun" effect from insurance companies where we are all classed as high risk.

The attitude from the AA I found insulting and discriminatory and I would recommend any musician seeking insurance to avoid this company.

I signed on to E Sure but still paid £80 more than the last year!

Totally agree with this complaint of discrimination and it's not only musicians that are discriminated against. A clean licence must surely mean something to an insurer and this should weight any proposer as a lower risk expecially after 30 years of driving and 15 years NCB. What is going on?

I feel your pain, but there are musicians, and there are musicians (i.e. coke hoovers). It's a pity that a call to the AA to confirm which "type" of musician you are nowadays couldn't have sorted things out. You've obviously had the misfortune of being associated along with a very large group of immature, irresponsible, fun loving, ner-de-wells. Maybe a set of sub-categories for large groups such as musicians would help.

I sympthasise with the extra £80. One extra £80 now and then would be acceptable. But when, like nowadays, you're being asked to pay an extra £(insert figure) on a daily, if not hourly basis it's beyond a joke. It won't be long before the average peron's wage will be a negative amount, then where will we be? We'll all be walking around with negative equaity. How much more can they take?
