As soon as I joined the queue I realised i'd made a mistake, as the 2 gentlemen before me were having issues with the agent.
When I finally got to the front of the queue, I found out that despite booking 3 weeks in advance, they didn't have my key ready. He asked me to wait, before serving 2 more customers, then making the long walk to the car park to collect the keys and bring them back himself. It said a lot that the 5 people waiting in the rental office were all waiting on him. Every other company had served twice that many customers in the same time.
When I finally got there, I was a little silly and hadn't done the license share via the DVLA. Since I didn't know my NI number by heart, they agreed to do it for me, and charged me £20.
Again, it was my own fault, but when I seen the extent of the work involved, I was furious - he dialled a number, passed the phone to me, we had a 10 second conversation and all was done! £20!!!
At this point, is started checking online reviews, and what I found explained a lot. Google 'Inter Rent reviews' and you'll see what I mean.
When I mentioned to the agent that i'd already been waiting for 30 minutes, his response was, word for word: 'It's only been 30 minutes sir'.
That's 30 minutes too long, I booked this 3 weeks ago! By the time I got in the car it had been an hour!
To add to this, he then pushes insurance on me, hard sell. I was then told that if the car is dirty when it's returned, they'll charge me £15, but if I paid £7.50 now, they'd clean it anyway. To my disgust, when I eventually got to the car it was filthy anyway!
I was also told there was no damage on the car. When I checked it there were a few light marks which wouldn't usually be an issue and would probably polish out. I made sure I took pictures, dated them and had the Europecar agent sign them off. As you can tell, I had 0 confidence in the company by this time.
As others had mentioned, there was no Inter Rent employee at the pick-up point. It was a one man band at the desk!
I didn't think it was possible to openly treat customers this badly in the UK nowadays, turns out I was wrong. Usually I would give companies a second chance - not Inter Rent.
