I recently hired a car from Vatsteras Sweden for a few days. On return I refuelled very near to the airport the pump stopped and car fuel guage indicated full at a cost of SKR150. We proceeded to the the airport and returned the car. I subsequently got billed SKR161 plus SKR120 refuelling cost £33.54 extra on my creditcard. On emailing the fuel receipt to Hertz and telephoning twice to Sweden customer services told me they had instructed a refund of the money. Then I get an email claiming we had not fully refuelled the car. They quoted a car fuel consumption of between .4 to .7 Swedish miles to a litre and claim we drove 341km. Then they try to justify the charge by claiming they had to add a further 12.78 litres of fuel based on .65 swedish miles to the litre consumption. I have no proof of the fuel usage but know I filled the car up. It is possible I suppose that the petrol pump may have underfilled but to underfill nearly 13 litres is unlikely. In my opinion this is one big rip off but one I can do nothing about.

I had the same experience at Gatwick Airport. They are charging me £30.00 for 2 miles worth of petrol. I filled up until the pump stopped (as the car manual instructs you to do). I do not hold up much chance of getting any money back. It is obviously company policy for the staff to do exactly what the manual tells you not to do, ie fill it to overflowing. A huge scam in my opinion. They won't be getting any more of my business, not that they will care.
