The car we hired off the net was a Renault Modus, BIG WINDOWS, to see the sights. Got issued with another Renault which was in poor condition, battered actually! Even after questioning why we got such a used battered car I was informed that the cars were new and it was clients that ruined them. Logical. After collecting the car and taking photos of every scratch, dents, wheel rims, missing hubcaps etc, ( proof that the damage was not caused by me ) we set off. After driving for 1/2 an hour I then realised why the car was so battered as the roads on Madeira other than the free way, are the hilliest, curvy, windy steepest I've come across!! Any tourist that hires a car that doesn't drive well will be paying for damages. On Madeira its inevitable!!! Besides the car being a little underpowered for the hill climbs it was a good runabout.

Recommendation: Pay more for a bigger engined car. Don't hire a car unless you consider yourself a better than average driver, if not, then take out all the accident damage insurance you can because it could be an expensive car hire.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful at Rodavante Car Hire and the office was easy to find.

Fast car hire had the best rates off the net but need to update the vehicle choice as what was chosen was not delivered.
