“AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CharityStuart175 on 27/06/2017

The title says it all. I was given a car that had clearly seen better days. Quick scan of the far from easy to digest form seemed to have everything covered, so with a really tired family of 5 in tow we hit the road. No issues over the hire... Apart from a dodgy tyre pressure sensor... But managed to reset that. Returned the vehicle no issues. Get home and they've charged me an additional 56 euros... No idea why... No contact from them. Think it must be a mistake... Maybe a double charge for the fuel Id already paid for. Oh no... After getting it touch with them and waiting over a week for a reply... I'd been charged for a damaged wing mirror. I know everyone says this but it GENUINELY WASNT ME! it must have been there before. Looking at the paperwork retrospectively the area damaged was flagged on the paperwork... But there must have been another Mark in the same section of the vehicle. Or it happened after the dropped the car off. Either way I've been charged for damage I haven't done. They just take your money and there's nothing you can do. AVOID!

Dear customer,
We require all customers to either opt for our Smart cover on arrival, which covers all eventualities, or leave a deposit.
If the Smart cover isn´t taken then any damage to the car is charged directly to you and then you claim from your own insurance.
We also ask all customers to check the car on collection as all damage not reflected on the initial contract will unfortunately have to be charged for.
You are solely responsible for any damage to the car during your rental period.
Kind regards, Centauro Rent a Car

We empathise. Happened to us too. We had absolutely no damage on the car on its return to Centauro Lisbon - the only damage was there when we signed off on it when we collected the vehicle. We opted for the half tank (31 euros) and the toll transponder. The car was inspected on our return and signed off - the deposit was returned.
However we got back to Australia and there was a 500 Euro charge on our credit card. We chased it up - supposedly damage we had caused - which of course was the VERY SAME damage that was there when we took the vehicle. Also the 31 euro charge was not returned - and neither was double charging on some of the tolls. We did not let it lie. Yes there are things you can do. Contact your bank for charge-backs - contact the rental agency if you booked that way and hammer the company with emails. Keep copies of everything and report it to the relevant regulators. We recommend that you photograph every inch of the car on its return including the staff member checking it off. Video him/her saying that it is all good. Five weeks later our monies were returned. It is not easy but only persistence will stop this obviously popular scheme.
