“San Diego Car Hire - very confusing.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Matthaus on 20/10/2014

We arrived at Split to be greeted by a guy from a company called San Diego Car Hire (first time I heard of them). The guy walked me to the car park and gave me a choice of 2 cars. He could not provide me with a Sat Nav which was a big problem. He then asked me where I was going and I told him our itinerary. He said I will need a Green Card (which turns out I didn't) which was 100kn and I could only pay cash only. He said I also need to pay 300kn (again in cash) because I was leaving the car in Dubrovnik. This was made clear when I booked through the price comparison website but did not expect these hidden costs. No wonder they came out the cheapest! So I hadn't even driven off and I am 400kn in cash worse off than I had expected.

Whilst on the island of Hvar I had a missed call and an SMS saying that they want to replace the car and they wanted to meet up to swap it. I ignored this as I was on holiday and not keen to interrupt my time to arrange meeting these people to swap cars. Finally on the return to Dubrovnik airport the guys waiting outside the Avis Car Hire stand who worked for San Diego Car Hire were confused that the car I had returned was not the correct car and were concerned that the car I had just driven 550km in had a faulty wheel and should have been repaired after the previous customer had raised a concern.
