Car waiting at the airport as arranged. Although we had already purchased CDW excess insurance, we decided to purchase the excess waiver with the car hire firm on collection. It wasn't clear when we booked that we had only paid for an insurance policy to claim back the excess, without purchasing further insurance we could have had to hand over €800 for the excess had their been an accident, and then waited to claim the money back. The excess waiver cost a further €90 euros.
Car wasn't particularly clean inside, it smelt rather strange. We also found debris in the back the following day left by the previous people, so the car obviously hadn't been cleaned thoroughly.
Car was approximately 5 years old as it was a Hyundai Getz and these have not been made for some time now. It did show, suspension wasn't good, although as the roads in Malta are poor this is probably to be expected. Car did tend to 'wobble' around corners and did rattle and groan, however it was reliable so cannot complain.
Overall for what we paid for two weeks car hire we probably got what we paid for. More attention to cleaning however is needed.
Clearer information about the CDW excess insurance is also needed. When booking it reads as if you are purchasing excess waiver, it's only once booked you realise the small print states this is an insurance policy which covers you to claim back any excess in the event of damage or an accident. As some companies have excesses of€1000 or more, this could prove expensive as there is no information which states how quickly you get your money back. As we did not feel happy with this we ended up paying for the excess waiver with the hire company.
