We rented a small hatchback ( from Hertz)car from Tanger airport not wanting to drive IN Tanger. The location was perfect, a taxi drive from our Riad. The fellow at the desk didn't speak English so we stumbled through with pictures and 30 year old West Coast of Canadian French (not too bad). the young man was really nice, walked us out to the one year old car where we took down a record of all scratches and diets, of which there were tons. I even took a few pictures as a precaution. So, although the little car sounded like a sewing machine when driving uphill and the air con was pretty pathetic (it was a smoking 40 degrees), it did get us to Chefchauen and Asilah in one day and back to the airport by 8pm with no problems. They give you the car with an empty tank (and directions to the nearest gas station), actually flashing empty which was nerve wracking, and we found the gas station without problems but we weren't sure how much gas we would need - if we were to get lost or something, and we filled it up as a precaution. We new it was complete overkill as we had to return it empty, but for the peace of mind, it was worth it. Maybe giving you a full tank would be more reasonable with expectations to fill up on return, but hey, it was a really inexpensive car rental and we had no troubles!!!!! Also, police at road checks were great.... Welcoming us to there country, no hassles like we were warned about! Driving in Morocco was great.
