“Series III False and misleading information!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by IrishShane on 07/02/2012

I contacted the County & Defender Centre regarding a Series 3 landrover they had advertised with a genuine 38,000 miles on the clock with paperwork to prove it.
I put a £1000 deposit on the vehicle and travelled from Ireland with my young son to collect the vehicle.
I was met at the ferry by two gents with the vehicle. Unfortunately I was very ill at the time but decided to pick up the vehicle anyway as the ferry and train tickets had been paid for etc.
I had been told the vehicle had a very small amount of rust. Bulk head was perfect and mechanically sound. I asked specifically regarding the mileage and was told all the paperwork was there to prove it.

On first inspection of the vehicle I could see immediately there were rust holes through the floor.
Doors were corroded and the dashboard was hanging freely as the bulk head mounting points were missing " gone due to rust". I basically tried to get out of the deal but was told by the delivery guys that their job was just to deliver. I would have to contact the manager which I did.
Having travelled from Cork to Dublin then to Wales and feeling like death I foolishly handed over the money £4500. They even tried to convince me the price was actually £4600. Which it was not!

As I had to take the vehicle across on the ferry to Dublin and then drive it to Cork I asked for it to be inspected. I was also transporting my 6 year old son who thought picking up a vehicle in the UK might be an adventure.
The vehicle did in fact make it to Cork however it's was blowing a lot of smoke. I drove the vehicle to get it registered in Ireland about a 10 mile trip. On the way back the smoke got worse.
I then spent approx £500 on getting the pump and injectors done which did not fix the problem. I noticed that the engine was painted Red and not the original Duck egg you would expect on a vehicle with only 38k on e clock.
Going through the paperwork it seemed that the paperwork trail only went back to 1990 "the vehicle was 1973"
With the engine smoking, vibration from the tailshaft, rust hole in the diff housing , rusted out bulk head, hole in the floor, drivers door that wouldn't close, loose front wings etc etc it seemed some major work was required.
To date, I have spent another £2000 min on the vehicle and approx 200 hours trying to get it roadworthy. It's still off the road as I write this 8 months after I bought the vehicle.
To sum up.
The vehicle was advertised as Genuine 38 miles with paperwork. This was completely false. It's more like 138k at least.
The vehicle is full of rust apart from the chassis that was galvanised.
I would expect a company that specialises in these types of vehicles could spot a good vehicle and overseas buyers could put their trust in them.
I was after an original unmolested vehicle and paid top dollar for what I was told was exactly that.
I would not recommend this company to anyone buying a vehicle. I wa basically lied to and ripped off.
