While I can't imagine these days anyone going to a main dealer and paying the full List Price for their new car. I also can't imagine the main dealer giving you a massive 33% discount against the List Price, and that's what I achieved by buying my car via Nationwide.

I must admit it is a little disconcerting to make the payment (I did a Bank Transfer) and not have a car to show for it immediately, but you can do a few things to improve your confidence in the process i.e. :

1. Check the Company Registration (hopefully listed on the quote you'll get, and on the website) is listed at Companies House.
2. Check the VAT Registration Number.
3. Make sure you get an Invoice for the car before paying.
4. Nationwide Cars are registered with the FCA and therefore can give out Financial Advice, so you can check the FCA Database to see if they're listed, maybe that's the same for some other companies.
5. You can cross check all that data e.g. Company Registration details, FCA Register, VAT Registration, Postal Address, Website Address, Email Address, Telephone number etc. etc. cross check it, and if it checks out then they are more than likely legitimate.

Nationwide checked out on all these tests, and my car was delivered to me successfully today (16/05/2016) a few days after the payment was made.
