I took the megabus for the first time and was very disappointed. The first bus ride, though it left on time, was a disaster. The bus driver boxed in all the cars that dropped people off so they had to wait for everyone to get on the bus to leave. He then missed his first stop in Detroit, so we drove 40 mins outside of Detroit before all waking up (this was an overnight bus) to him yelling on speakerphone to someone at headquarters, while we were pulled over on the side of the highway, about not being willing to go back for the people waiting in Detroit. After listening to him loudly argue for 10 mins he finally turned around and drove the 40 mins back to Detroit to pick up the passengers he'd missed. Our bus ride was now extended one hour and twenty minutes. Upon picking up the passengers in Detroit the bus driver then got lost and could not find the freeway. The passengers themselves had to point him in the right direction. He passed I-75 and had to turn around to get back on, even after the passengers telling him where to go. Now you'd think it would be a peaceful journey now that we were on our way again, but the male bus driver continued to have conversations on speakerphone and loudly complain to the female bus driver nearly the whole ride. By the time we'd picked up passengers in Lansing and Grand Rapids, the bus driver had quieted down and we were all finally getting some rest on the way to Chicago, when all of a sudden he pulls the bus over again on the side of the highway. This time he wakes everyone up by walking back through the bus shining his flashlight on everyone, trying to find one lady he claims was being too loud. Too loud?!!! He was the loudest, most disturbing person on that bus! When we finally arrived in Chicago in the morning, he rudely yelled at everyone to get off the bus.
For my return trip to Detroit, I was looking forward to a simple ride, hoping not to again encounter troubles. The ride itself was quick and painless, however the waiting was cold and required me to spend more money than I had budgeted for the weekend, as the bus was 3 hours late! I received an email from megabus at 5.50pm that my 3.30 bus had been delayed 2 1/2 hours. At this point, I had already been waiting out in the cold for two hours and twenty minutes and had 40 more minutes to wait before actually leaving Chicago.
The point here is that I had finally thought America had a clean, efficient transportation system that could be relied on and was disappointed to find out that you get what you pay for and can only take the megabus if you have no plans, schedule, time or money to keep.
