Having been a Virgin Media customer some 5 or 6 years ago I swore that I would never go back to using them again. Unfortunately economics clouded my judgement (Virgin offered a free alternative to having to spend £125 on a new BT line) and I went back with them.
At first things seemed to have been an improvement (they have at least now relocated their customer services) however Virgin soon reverted to form. Despite paying for a 20MB service (and being told that the line could normally carry about 9 mbps) the broadband service was incredibly slow. It would take minutes to load up a normal web page and using anything that required a large volume of download capacity (such as BBC iplayer) has been nigh on impossible.
In addition the service has been wholly unreliable and the internet connection has often been dropped for days at a time with no explanation or recompense from Virgin.
The price for this poor service is really not competitive either. I have been paying £36 per month just for a phone and broadband package. For the equivalent from competitors it would be possible to get a full phone, broadband and premium TV package!
Today I tried to close my service with Virgin Media as I've really had enough of persevering with it and they've told me that despite being out of contract I will need to pay £24 for the prilege of no longer being a customer of theirs. Apparently this is hidden in the small print of the agreement! Quite a nice little scam they have going on there...pay us to stay or pay us to leave.
I will never make the mistake of going back to Virgin again.
