Lindsayxw370's review of RAC Breakdown Cover

“What's the point”

My wife and I have been with RAC for years - we take the full cover. We do most of our miles within 30 miles radius of home with the odd longer journey. I always saw them as insurance in case we needed recovery, especially at night.
The last time I personally needed then was about six years ago, my Golf was written off in flood water that got into the engine – I was four miles from home. I was very clear when I ran the RAC that flood water had got into the engine - I waited two hours for recovery to arrive and was then told it would cost £100 to be towed home because it wasn’t a breakdown. I was fuming; I could have arranged a fee tow had I know. Fast forward six years, no further need to call RAC until my wife got a puncture on the way home from holiday – she owned up to the fact she may have clipped a pavement at a roundabout, she was advised it was her fault – something like £200 for RAC to assist and much more if she needed a tow! I wasn’t going to do that, I drove to her, and changed the wheel in less than an hour.
I really think someone needs to offer a policy which really does provide the fourth emergency service – but it’s not likely to be the RAC.
