“2 women left stranded on M56!”

I had been with GEM for 5 years up until last night I had received a great service from them, a little slow on the recovery but never mind I was always safe.

In August 2014 I bought a Nissan Primastar Van and rung GEM to make sure I was still covered, which I was told I was until the 1st August 2015, as I had taken my policy out before a certain date in 2014.

Last night I was travelling from Anglesey to Leeds and had just got onto the M56 when I heard a pop. So I pulled into the nearest hard shoulder and checked the van for any punctures - nothing. So I continued along the motorway but the van was sounding throaty and loosing power, so again I pulled over and rung GEM. I got a rather rude man - who was getting annoyed at me as I didn't know where I was on the M56 (I was in-between junctions and had been following my sat nav whilst chatting to my friend). He then encouraged me to limp along the motorway to find a land mark. After giving him a motorway reference point he informed me that I would not be able to recovered by themselves as my van was too heavy. I informed him that they had recovered me twice before and the information above. He rudely said "well you shouldn't have been recovered as your van is too heavy".

I then asked was there nothing he could do - thinking I could pay a recovery fee to get home safely, and was rudely informed there was nothing he could do and that he was prepared to leave 2 vulnerable women under the age 25 on the M56!

Extremely bad service!!!

I was very sorry to note the problems experienced by this reviewer following the breakdown of her van on Sunday 26th July.

Regrettably the member’s breakdown cover with us expired on 19th July and despite requests for her to renew her policy no such action had been taken. We did try to help the reviewer as she was offered assistance by our control centre on a pay first basis, but this was refused. It is also true that GEM cover is restricted to vans with a maximum Gross Vehicle weight of 2,500kgs although as stated this was not a factor given that the insurance policy had previously expired.

We are of course very sorry that this former member suffered this inconvenience but as with all insurances it is vital to ensure cover is in force before attempting to make a claim.
