We had a Grant Vortex condensing oil boiler installed 9 years ago to replace an ancient non-condensing boiler that we had inherited when we bought the house some 20 years earlier which had finally stopped working and was obsolete. The Grant Vortex has been regularly (annually) serviced and has generally been reliable, although it has required several replacement parts during the time we have had it. However,at its last service, our service engineer (who we have used for over 30 years) found rust flaking from an area of the boiler that he said could not be replaced. He said it was evidence of a leak within the boiler and that this could only get worse, so he advised that we have a new boiler. He recommended another Grant boiler because of their general reliability and suggested that it should be possible to reutilise the existing flue. It was disappointing therefore to hear from him some days later that the latest version of the boiler was not compatible with the existing Grant flue and that the whole thing would need to be replaced at a cost of £2860 + VAT. The new boiler was installed yesterday, so we are not yet able to review its performance; but we were less than happy that its predecessor gave us only 9 years' service and that a perfectly good flue had to be thrown away because of design changes.
