I tried to open a new Current Account with Santander, the computer systems were down so they wrote my details on a paper application and said they would transfer them to the system as soon as it was working again. 4 days later, I had heard nothing from them, no calls, letters, nothing. I called Complaints and got straight through to a very polite and apologetic bloke, who insisted they would call me between 4 and 5 PM the day after. Suriprise, surprise. No calls that day either. That day, I called Complaints again. I got through to a rude, huffy foreigner who asked for my details, I gave them to her and... The moment the Complaints Centre closed, my call was dropped. No warnings, just dropped like a brick from a skyscraper. They should finish all their last calls before hanging up, that's what most organisations do. It seems the Santander way of thinking is nice and simple, hang up before they even explain their problem to you. The odd thing is on their site, www.santander.co.uk, it states the Complaints Centre closes at 8pm on weekdays. They actually closed at 5:30pm. I am now having to write a letter to their Complaints department instead.
