“Customer relations poor - and account gone downhill”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mozart5 on 09/05/2019

Really disappointed to be departing First Direct, after having been part of it since it started. The trouble is, they perceive themselves as special, so - they no longer give interest on current accounts, and no longer care about customer service. It's the same old story: started off exceptional - no longer care. I'm off to MetroBank myself, which is (yet again) new and caring. I am fed-up with all the increasing hoops one needs to get through, just to see if a client has paid, and with the level of customer service, which is poor. I guess maybe it always seems better, in the beginning? At any rate, strongly not recommended.

“OK UNTIL YOU REQUEST TO CLOSE THE ACCOUNT ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by rhino_1 on 31/03/2016

I have had a FD account for about 15 years and since then i have seen some changes to the way they operate. I am only leaving on the regards that i do not need the account anymore and as you DONT EARN INTEREST on the account it is pointless keeping it open. I have requested to close the said account more than once and all i get is aggro over security questions and the information is wrong etc etc. They are not as good overall as they think they are and i would suggest to find an bank account / bank that is more reliable !!!

Exactly my experience. I have been with them for 27 years but am now leaving. They are the least customer-oriented organization I have every dealt with.

“Great bank for current accounts”

★★★★★

written by KobeMcCormick on 02/08/2015

Been a customer for over 7 years now and very happy with their service. Have a current account with them and all works well, there are real people on the phone when you call them and they are actually willing to help. Had an issue with a remortgage a couple of years ago and they quickly offered me £15k as a loan and I had the money in my account 20 minutes later. Mortgage and savings accounts are not very competitive though, so have them with other banks.

“value for money banking”

★★★★★

written by bexsy on 25/09/2014

I pay £0 for banking, and I have the use of an overdraft, really simple to use, easy switching service, access at any time any computer, excellent customer support when you call, always speak to someone from uk!I think they could improve a little like being able to nick name accounts, can get a bit confusing if you have several. £100 for switching...I'd say worth it, previous bank kept increasing charges so I ended up paying £20 or more /month for same service, now I get it all for free.

“Ridiculously bad”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/01/2014

This has been my worst account opening experience ever. My partner and I applied online first, then were told we had to apply again over the phone, and spent one hour each with an operator. Two months later, we haven't heard back yet from First Direct. After complaining, all they tell us is we need to retrieve the application again online, something their website wont let us do. In summary: absolutely awful, dishonest service. Avoid at all costs.

“Nightmare banking!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Reginaldfw on 22/08/2013

Wish someone had told me about this so called bank! Took out current accounts for my wife and myself....took ages to set up and reams of paper and pamphlets. Security process when telephoning was laughable...I never seemed to get it right....but was it just me? Paying in £1500 per month was a pain and my wife decided it was not worth the effort and tried to close her account. She wrote a letter, they phoned, and it took three hours to close. They immediately denied her Internet access, so when they transferred her monies to HSBC she could not check the amount or recent transactions. They also omitted to transfer the direct debits, and when she rang they said they held no details and to contact HSBC. They had no details either. Back to first direct and Lo, they found the details and said they had just cancelled them! Now she is setting up new DDs and will have to pay direct herself due to the delay. She was refused the £100 service guarantee payment due to one months payment in of only £1000, not the £1500! As soon as I transfer my ISA I will close my account also. Steer well clear of this shambles, they are not as good at service as they profess to be, not by a long chalk!

“A big fan for many years!”

★★★★★

written by on 29/06/2013

I have had an account for over twenty years and throughout that time I have experienced excellent service almost throughout. Not perfect, but so much better for most of the time than it might be reasonable to expect. I would have no problem recommending First Direct to any friend of member of my family. There is an incentive scheme for people who make referrals, but I am receiving nothing for writing this review! For most of the time I have had an account I have used the online service, though in the early years it was the telephone service that I used. Both means of approach have been excellent, with the telephone service being particularly helpful when I needed it. Their telephone operators are excellent, unlike other organisations I have had the misfortune to have to deal. If any of First Direct's telephone operators from the last twenty years are reading here I salute and congratulate you! Here is to the next twenty years - I hope it is as good!

“Would recommend but with caveats”

★★★☆☆

written by Charlotteadelesmith on 29/04/2013

I've been with first direct for a few years now. Find them to be good customer service, well trained staff and answer within at least 3 years. I have to say, better than some banks. In addition to this, Online banking system is easy to use and customer friendly. Whenever i have requested an overdraft or a bit of information on new accounts, they all know there stuff so this is good. Negatives include there mortgage process is lengthy and they are very very tight on lending. I went through a good 1 hour phone call to be interrogated about my finances to then hear it was a no. They could clearly see the funds in my account, but it seemed like they didn't trust me. it wasn't good enough and they were looking for more re-assurance i could afford the down payment (even though it was in my account already). I would recommend this to someone require 24/7 easy access. but not if you;re looking for a mortgage or good interest rates.

“First Class”

★★★★★

written by mcmatt on 09/04/2013

I joined First Direct a few years ago, with the offer of £100 free to join, and another £100 if I left within a year. I never bothered to collect the second £100, as they have provided consistently excellent service. The main benefit - when you call up to discuss your account, you get straight through to a human being with a brain. No computerised menus or moronic scripts - and so far they have fixed issues quickly and fairly. Thoroughly recommended.

“Who are First Direct?”

★★★★★

written by ken.webb on 10/03/2013

Use them every day, rarely hear from them and they rarely hear from me, perfect! I joined them from Lloyds Tsb about 10 years ago and use their internet banking. Everything has always run as smooth as silk. If I ever have had the need to call them, maybe 4/6 times, they have always been helpful and quick to advise. They actually called me a week or so ago and checked some transactions that had appeared, seems someone had tried using my account details to obtain a pay day loan! New debit card appeared 3 days later and nothing erroneous showed on my account! Would recommend them wholeheartedly.

“Was a good bank, but being copied and bettered by...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mozchops on 04/01/2013

If you like being treated like an utter muppet, then I would highly recommend 1st Direct. I have banked with them since 1996, but not anymore. My experience of late has been the pits and I have closed my account due to the insulting and patronizing way I was treated as a so called loyal customer. I wanted to try them for a car loan as they more competitive than the car dealer...Big mistake, I was experienced to a 40 mins phone interrogation by some half- wit picking over ever area of my finances. All for 7k! The car was worth 3 times that. Ironic as they gave me a First Direct credit card with a limit of 7k without one single question about my finances.... Anyway after a stupefying 40 mins of being treated like a dummy, justifying why I thought I could afford £300 a month, my loan was reluctantly authorized... Get lost 1st Direct. You’d think after 16 yrs of loyal banking, never being over-drawn and depositing £100,000s

“very good”

★★★★☆

written by on 22/11/2012

been with them for 25 years ie since the start and very happy, quick to pick up the phone helpful and polite and 100% satisfied( UK call centre Scotland I think) but, the visa dept I am pretty sure is on another continent and it has a different feel, not as reassuring, I had a BIG problem with a charge back issue and there is a big gap in my opinion between the UK general centre and the VISA dept.

“They just close my account”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ihatefirstdirect on 25/07/2012

One day I was a valued customer the next day they closed my account with no explanation. I didn't overdraw and had a very generouse salary going into the account? Ohh yes they closed it a day before pay day and left me totally stranded. BE WARNED they appear nice but they make up their own rules as I go along.

“Poor internet banking, good phone service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/06/2012

FIRST DIRECT CURRENT ACCOUNT: FD is part of HSBC, but the call centres are based in Yorkshire, not India. As a result, the 'phone service is efficient and punchy. However, and it's a big however, the internet banking service is really poor. Other banks and building societies had better internet banking services at the turn of the millenium let alone now. You have to set up payees using FD's names - you can't enter details yourself. Similarly, you can't rename or amend payees yourself. This is basic stuff! Instead of spening money to put this right, FD is spending money on wacky social media projects, podcasts and asking you to "like" it on facebook. I opened an account with them a few years ago, but am now going back to one of two building societies (also UK call centres) both of which have far better internet bankijng functionality. It's a shame - the phone service is very good, but that's just not enough.

“Exceptionally good, modern personal banking”

★★★★★

written by on 13/04/2012

I have held a 1st account with First Direct for 6 months and I received a £100 incentive within a month of switching from HSBC. I agree with the review below - at last there is a bank with decent, courteous and helpful customer service. The best feature of First Direct is that you call up and straight away get through to an adviser. For other banks you have to enter anything up to 3 different security numbers (how the elderly use telephone banking is beyond me). Internet banking is exceptionally straightforward and I have had no issues here either. You don't even need a secure token to log on. The regular saver is very flexible with a good interest rate. If you can't afford to put in the full £300 one month you can reduce the amount at any time and I have contributed as little as £50 to my regular saver. I highly recommend First Direct, which in my view scores a full 10/10. I would score Santander 1/10 and HSBC 7/10.

“A decent bank at last”

★★★★☆

written by dicey on 12/04/2012

I switched from Lloyds TSB to First Direct years ago, and have been delighted with their service ever since. They are prompt, helpful and courteous. This should be the norm, but it's like the sighting of a rare animal in the banking sector, so I felt compelled to report it. Definitely worth the switch! The only drawback is that you have to credit so much into your bank account every month to get it for free. If you can afford to do that, it's totally worth it!
