A catalogue of failures at Stansted Airport this morning caused much distress and serious health and safety risks. I and my family were left stranded on the runway at Stansted Airport in the early hours of this morning when all the staff seemed very keen to leave. I and my family (including my elderly parents, 4 year old twins in buggies and our 12 year old daughter) were left on the runway at the bottom of 2 flights of stairs with no assistance. I had to go searching the runway for someone to help us. When we eventually made it to the top of the stairs we found that the doors to the airport had been closed! We and another 7 or 8 passengers, including someone who required the use of a walking stick, were trapped for approx 45 min behind security doors which had been closed without anyone checking all the passengers had left to go to baggage reclaim. My parents needed to take medication and were left with no access to water, toilets etc. The airport was like a ghost town! We found the experience very distressing. When the baggage handling company (Swissport) manager eventually opened the doors he had no idea what had happened. We then had to wait over 15 minutes for someone to activate a lift to get us to the transit train. The Airport staff were, at best, indifferent and, at worse, aggressively defensive, reducing my daughter to tears. Multiple flights then waited hours for luggage leaving many wondering how they were going to get home at 3.30am. In all we were delayed by 4 hours. Was this an unofficial Strike by Swissport? At no point did anyone give us any information or an apology. The Airport manager just kept telling everyone to calm down and any request was met with a repetition of "I don't have the facility to do that". All in all, a totally unacceptable experience at Stansted.
