I booked flights to and from Portugal recently for a family holiday. Because we were travelling with 2 young children, I chose the flights at the best times which meant going out with Ryanair and back home with Easyjet. I ticked the box to add insurance as I always do. Unfortunately we had to cancel our holiday at the last minute because our son had chicken pox so I rang to claim this back on the travel insurance.
Imagine my shock when I was told that the insurance sold to me by Easyjet was NOT VALID because I didn't live in Portugal! They had my address details already and yet they still sold me an insurance policy knowing they would never have to pay out on it. I am now £400 worse off because I can't claim the flight costs back.
Yes there will no doubt be something in the small print about this, but the simple fact is that they MISSOLD a product that was never going to pay out. It was not fit for purpose and they should never have offered it to me if it was not valid.
I have written to the CEO of Easyjet and will also be writing to the ombudsman because in the current climate where all financial services are under close scrutiny, I feel they have obtained money by deception. I wonder how many people have innocently paid the insurance premium but not had to claim, which means that Easyjet have pockeded the money knowing they would never have to pay out!
Not impressed at all.....
